Scenic park overlooking the Susquehanna River.
We enjoyed hiking and walking around this beautiful area along the Susquehanna River. Chickies Rock overlook offers great views from high above the river. You can also park at the Breezyview Overlook and hike down to the Heritage Trail, which is a paved trail that has some historical markers and a few ruins relating to the iron industry of the mid-19th to early-20th century in the area.

Nissley Winery has a nice selection of both red & white wines as well as a few rose'. They range from dry to sweet with numerous choices. My favorites are their dry reds as well as their semi-dry Naughty Merieta. The venue is a grand...MoreThanks so much for your kind words! We are glad you had a good time here and enjoyed our property, and the wines. Oh, and there is really space for about 3000 people :)

We were on Route 30 in Hellam, PA (between York and Lancaster) when I caught a glimpse of a "shoe house" just off the highway. After trying to describe it to my husband, I asked him to get off at the next exit so that we could try to find it, and we did! What a GEM! This was built in 1948 by an eccentric shoe salesman, by the name of Mahlon Haines. For $5 per person, we had a WONDERFUL tour of the "house" which has now been lovingly restored! It's obvious that the new owners (for two years) are putting their heart and "sole" into sharing this wonderful historic property with others. Melanie (the owner and tour guide) shared interesting stories about the original owner, and there are many interesting artifacts throughout the house. I was impressed with their attention to detail, including flowers that were potted in boots on the porch, a little "shoe house" night light on a dresser in a bedroom, "shoe house" salt & pepper shakers, and much more! This far exceeded my expectations, not knowing really what to expect! It's a wonderful, unique, fun, family oriented place to visit, and you can end the tour with some AMAZING ice-cream. (I had the chocolate marsh mellow, and it was AWESOME!) You will not be disappointed in this wonderful example of "Americana" at its best! I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. I LOVED this place, and I LOVED the warmth and friendliness of the owner!

We had company visit from Brooklyn. They had a toddler so we decided to visit the Alpaca Farm. It was packed with people as it was an open house day. It was a great little treat and we all enjoyed it.

Escape a magnificent Victorian era 1875 bank. Up to 10 players per room may collaborate to reveal secrets, interact with vintage technology, find treasure, and challenge their wits. Free parking in the rear of our building. Spend time in historic Marietta, PA on our river trail, at a pub, or walking our town where over 50% of our buildings are on the National Historic Register.
This was so interesting and fun, we had such a great time finding money and getting the gold! I can't wait until Steve creates a few more!

While visiting Lancaster County we took a trip to the Wright;s Ferry Mansion in Columbia, Pa. It does not appear to be a mansion in the conventional sense. It is however, a very sturdy, well-maintained pre-revolutionary structure tucked away on a somewhat secluded residential street. Its history and the history of its primary resident, Susanna Wright, is very interesting. The home is basically intact from its original construction. It is filled with period items that make the description of each room almost come to life. This is primarily due to the guide-Elizabeth. She is extremely knowledgeable on all facets of the home, Miss Wright, and early American living in general. Her enthusiasm and love for her job made the difference in the tour. This home is well worth visiting.

This past week, my preschooler and I went to Flinchbaugh's for her fall field trip. She loved it so much that we returned today with the entire family to check out the orchard and farm market again. Flinchbaugh's is a great outdoor fall activity for the family!
When we visited Flinchbaugh's with my daughter's preschool class, we were so impressed with our tour guide, Julie. Not only was she knowledgeable about farming, but she was fantastic with the kids! She knew exactly how to get their attention, instruct them on complex topics such as pollination, and engage them in all kinds of activities from apple and pumpkin picking to feeding pigs. My daughter absolutely adored her!
The field trip consisted of several components: picking a pumpkin, picking an apple, riding on a hay ride, feeding pigs, learning about different types of corn and pollination, eating a snack (pretzels, apples, and apple cider), and playing on the hay bales and with various farm-related activities, such as tossing rings on corn cobs and rolling small gourds up a skee-ball type incline.
When we went to Flinchbaugh's mid-week, there were no food options for lunch other than items they were selling at the farmer's market; however, when we went back today, there was a tent set up to sell bar-b-que and a stand with kettle corn. There is a great picnic pavilion on site, though, with a number of picnic tables to use. This would be the perfect place to go with a packed lunch!
As far as pricing, everything was very reasonable. For the preschool field trip, we paid a total of $12 for my daughter and myself to do all of the above listed activities, and that included the snack, hayride, small pumpkin and an apple to take home as well. When we returned today, I believe the hayride was $2/person, and PYO apples and pumpkins were priced by the size of pumpkin or number of apples.
The farmer's market was definitely my favorite part of the day! They have a variety of fresh produce, including their own apples and pears. But they also sell a great number of other products, such as apple cider slushies, Perrydell Farms chocolate milk, Brown's apple cider, baked goods, and their own apple cider jelly, fruit preserves, and other products.
If you are looking for an affordable place to pick your own apples and pumpkins, go on a hayride, and play some fun outdoor farm-related games, Flinchbaugh's is a great option on the east end of York.
The only real negative is that the bathrooms are extremely limited -- literally one unisex stall indoors to service all of the customers at the orchard -- and one port-o-potty outside. The line for the bathroom for my 3-year-old was so long, she nearly had an accident. The only other minor complaint would be that there aren't quite as many activities at this orchard, compared to some other area orchards we've visited recently. But there is enough to do to keep our small children entertained for an hour or two, and that's really all that we wanted today!
Overall, I would definitely go to Flinchbaugh's if you are looking for a good fall fest in the eastern part of York. And while you're there, be sure to pick up an apple cider slushy, some Perrydell Farms chocolate milk, and some Brown's apple cider!

Another trail stop. The location is beautiful, but I think they overbooked. They had a wedding going at the same time as the wine trail. The parking was just not designed to handle this kind of volume traffic.
The staff were very friendly and helpful; there was a nice indoor seating area for cooler weather and a large, open deck area for warmer weather. They had a nice phot-op set up with an arch on the deck and the vineyard in the background.
They had several nice wines and a fairly good list of choices to satisfy almost any palette. A little bit of a drive to find, but it was beautiful country scenery.

Shanks is a great little bar. Nothing fancy, but it dates back to the 1800s and has the charm that comes from its longevity. The draft beer selection changes regularly and is always good. Tina knows her beer and can always be trusted for a good recommendation. The food is simple but made from scratch.
