Over-looking the bay of Machico lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club. Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a spectacular 27 hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. The MACHICO and the DESERTAS courses are the ones usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the SERRAS course, though slightly plain, maintains the same game level.
Although we don't golf, we decided to stop in to check out the club house and wow, how could you not love this place? The decor is so inviting and the staff so welcoming we decided to have dinner here. The scabbard fish meal with passion fruit and banana was superb and so beautifully presented. Compliments to the chef! Prices are very reasonable so don't hesitate to stop in.

Really enjoyed the walk across to end of the headland. Rock formation is fascinating. Great views. Dolphins seen in the bay. Tip - the excellent path is rough in places and I would recommend wearing good trainers or walking boots to support your feet.

This is relatively straightforward to get to by bus. This is a lovely walk up and down a valley. The walk is relatively easy to do. The views are great across the valley and so out to sea. At the end of the walk up the valley the path meets the river and it is a great place for a picnic before the return journey along the path.

We stopped on our way between Machico and Porto da Cruz, definitely worth the visit for the stunning views! We also had fab lunch there. Easy car park and not much walking involved. The clouds and fog just fly by 100times a minute, one can just stare and admire the view.

Beautiful beach, great location within the bay so the tide isn’t too rough to swim like in other parts of the island.
