On the banks of the lovely Elbe River, the German city of Dresden is lush and green, filled with forests and gardens and parks. The city is rich with cultural and artistic history; the great operatic composer Wilhelm Wagner debuted a number of works here in the 1800s and, today, an independent light opera company keeps the classical art form modern and fresh. Culture vultures will love the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister and Grünes Gewölbe museums, and architecture buffs will salivate over the mélange of styles reflected in the cityscape.

Once a pleasure palace and later summer residence of the Saxon royals, it used to be the venue for many weddings and festivities back in Augustus the Strong’s time. Museums moved into the Palace in the 20th century and the Palace Park is the city’s most beautiful recreational resort for both Dresdeners and tourists from all over the world. Situated only about 15 km from the city center of the Saxon state capital of Dresden, the Pillnitz Palace & Park is regarded one of the most important chinoise palace estates throughout Europe. The ensemble of architecture and landscaping lies before the backdrop of the vineyards, harmoniously embedded in the riverscape of the Elbe River valley. With such diversity, it is thought to be a perfect destination for lovers of culture and gardens and for families.
Big and diverse garden full of exotic trees, nice castle on the riverside of the Elbe, Good connection to public transport, highly recommended.

The museum is housed in Carl Maria von Weber’s (1786–1826) erstwhile summer home. It was at this picturesque estate that hewrote many of his operas, among them Der Freischütz, Euryanthe and Oberon. Today, pictures, texts and other artefacts related to his achievements and works are on view in the former livingand working rooms.

Clear summers day gives an amazing view along the Elbe both ways all the way to Saxon Switzerland and Dresden the other way. We walked out to Loschwitz along the river and a very pleasant walk it is too (special mention to the ice cream lady on the edge of Dresden who helped us along with an ice). Its an interesting architectural piece and, with a cafe / bar at the top a rewarding one. Time out to sip a beer on a hot day and enjoy the view. Loschwitz is a nice little village / suburb worth mooching around.

Stasi prison/Gedenkstätte at bautzner str has been preserved since the end of the war in 1945. The once hidden, cold, under ground Soviet prison with bare concrete walls and floors smells of mildew and urine. It is truly disheartening to see this place where so many Germans were taken after the war. A few signs are written in English but most are in German. The front desk has a 3 ring binder you can take with you and it explains some of the facility in English. First you visit the underground prison which operated from 1945-53. After looking through that you can go through a tunnel to get to the prison which was used from 1953-1990, Putin’s ID card was found here, he worked here for five years. There are rooms above the prison which are still the same - a large hall, offices, rooms. The Soviets could be celebrating upstairs while Germans were being interrogated and punished downstairs. There is a 6 euro fee to enter for adults, kids are free. Hours are 10-6 pm on Saturday. Free parking at the building, a bit hard to find, located down a driveway and behind another building. There is a sign on the street. It was a great opportunity to see how things were when the Soviets controlled East Germany.
