Set in a remarkable sculpture park, the LaM has established a unique itinerary for visitors, highlighting the intersection between modern art, contemporary art and art brut. With over 7,000 works, the museum provides a striking overview of the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. By encouraging new ways of interacting and thinking about art, whether through its permanent collection, temporary exhibitions or cultural programme, the museum is focused on sparking your sense of curiosity, and leaves you feeling inspired and moved. Inaugurated in 1983 to house the modern art donation bequeathed by Geneviève and Jean Masurel, the LaM has since emerged as a leading museum on the world stage. Boasting an ambitious programme, it encourages encounters between artists who not only bear witness to their time, but weave a deeply personal perspective into their work.
The museum was closed but I took the opportunity to visit the park. I was alone and had a wonderful time 10 beautiful statues, sculptures disseminated in a vast park Take the metro line 1, stop at petit bois then take the bus line 6 and stop at LaM. Bus every 10 mn. I bought my return ticket at the metro station in Lille

Main square where the magnificent 17th-century Vieille Bourse is located.
The Grand Place of Lille is a great place to meet up with friends to then walk Vieux Lille, sit at a cafe for a wine or beer, and people watching.

Designed by architect Julien Destrée, the Old Stock Exchange (circa 1653) is a magnificent example of the Flemish baroque style.
Marvelous building dominating the main square of the old city. Amazing architecture and details, both on exterior and in the courtyard.

We were lucky to be able to visit it, very impressive because very very large, very beautiful architecture, it must be incredible to see a match in this full stadium

Lovely long weekend destination. Great architecture - look for square beyond Place de Lion ( Place de Louise Bernieries?) for interesting Flemish style frontages. Feels safe, relaxed easy going city, with plenty of restaurants through the old town. Do book in advance though or risk walking from one to another looking for a table at weekends.

My wife and I are huge book lovers and you could definitely spend over an hour in here if you speak French. They have a small English section with books priced at around £10+. A great place to hide from the rain and get lost in all genres of books.

Prestigious art museum features works of Goya, Donatello and Veronese along with German paintings and sculptures from the 15th and 16th centuries.
The collection isn't huge but it's varied and really good. The relief maps of the old towns in the lower ground, the sculptures around the atrium and the paintings on the first floor provided a couple of interesting and enjoyable hours. The helpful guy on the ticket desk said that if we had Eurostar tickets we would get a 2 for 1 price. We did, so the cost of admission was 4 euros for both of us.

Lille Zoo is easy to get to using L1, 12 or L90 bus from Palais des Beaux Arts. A family ticket for 4 to get into the zoo costs 10€. Apparently two years ago the zoo was very mediocre so they shut and transformed- and what a transformation. It is not a large zoo, nor does it have a huge range of animals, but what it does have is a very intimate high quality experience. The zoo is really well laid out with a good route to follow in order to maximise viewing of all animals. Reassuringly all the animals have a lot of space to roam especially the armadillos, gibbons and the meerkats. There is a wonderful enclosure with exotic birds including scarlet egrets and ibis. Other animals currently on display include coatis, zebras, rhino, red panda, parakeets, owls, meerkats, armadillos, snow leopard, snakes, peacocks, gibbons, tapirs, wallabies and terrapins. If you have a spare three hours, this zoo is well worth visiting to see what a positive experience a zoo can be. All signs are currently in French but easy enough to translate with Google Translate!
