We came here during the summer (peak season) with our 8 year old son, who is very active and likes to touch everything. So this living history museum was perfect for him! The volunteer families at the homesteads were all very helpful, I think it helped that we were there during the times that they were supposed to officially engage with the public. We tasted food from different eras, explored houses, used an axe and stone age tools, paddled in a dugout canoe...my son shot a bow & arrow, engaged in a mock archaeological "dig" and attended Viking battle training. Access from Copenhagen took a bit of planning, but there was an hourly bus that ran from the train station in Lejre to the destination, and the trains from lejre to Copenhagen run every 30 minutes.
