The Fremont County Pioneer Museum in Lander is located at the foot of the Wind River Mountains in west central Wyoming and is Wyoming's oldest history museum. Beginning in 1916 the collections of artifacts include amazing Native American collections and artifact related to the Oregon, Mormon and California Trails, gold mining, agrigulture and ranching. The Pioneer Museum hosts a number of great programs each year as part of their Discovery Speakers Series, Children's Exploration Series and the Adventure Trek Series in addition to a historic walking tour of Lander.
The museum houses numerous artifacts from native tribes in the area such as drums, beaded gloves and shoes and war bonnets and the 2nd floor is dedicated to the history of the town of Lander. The displays are informative and interesting. There was a special exhibit called Ledger Art. We had never seen this type of work before. As the Plains Indians were forced to make the transition from living in the open prairie to the captivity of reservation life, this move also changed the way they recorded their art and history. As the Native people lost access to the leather animal hide, they began using the pages of old ledger accounting books formerly used by Indian Agents, traders and military officers to record their visual history. Very interesting pieces of artwork. Definitely worth a stop to see the interesting history of the town and the region.

Fun hike up to a series of waterfalls. It is impossible to get all the falls in one photo shot so the photos you may see online don't serve justice for this incredible cascade. The trail has no shade and in July it was pretty hot. Where a hat, sunscreen and bring water. We were alarmed by the number of people that were hiking without any water and they looked rather haggard up at the top. In these conditions the hike seemed a bit much for young children but if they are used to moderately steep unshaded uphill hikes than maybe they would be ok.

This is a Museum that focuses on preserving many of the old buildings from the early days of the Lander area. It includes early cabins, a schoolhouse, a church, a store, and more all set up as they would have been with the artifacts of the early times. Real living history with all the information to help you feel you have just stepped back in time and seeing it as it really was. It is managed and staffed by volunteers and they are very attentive and helpful. A must-see when you are in or passing through, Lander.
