Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we are limiting visitors in the shop to two at a time. We will be wearing masks and are requiring visitors to do the same. Island Carvers is a uniquely Northern Wisconsin Gallery featuring the hand carved figures of Chris Thompson and the chainsaw carvings of Ken Peterson. It also features a fun assortment of antiques & collectibles and gift items that we have laser engraved. Island Carvers is your one stop shopping experience on Madeline Island.
This is a great space on the island to find wood crafts. My wife and I found a great piece that we brought home.

This is a beautiful easy, level trail that is fun in any season -- it's a groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trail in winter. Walk through forest, and stop to view wetlands from an observation deck. There are benches along the trail for resting. A little over 2 miles round-trip, with the option of doing the somewhat wilder .85 mile offshoot Nucy Meech trail.

The North End Trails are wilderness trails that have been reclaimed from old survey lines and logging roads. Cross country skiers, snowshoers, hunters, hikers, blueberry pickers and nature enthusiasts enjoy these trails, which consist of two different loops that range from 3 ¾ miles to 7 miles long. The trails are marked with blazes. In spring, summer and fall, these trails can be wet, and the terrain is uneven and sometimes boggy. Hikers are advised to wear appropriate footwear and protective clothing, and perhaps bring a walking stick. Insect repellent is also advisable. Hikers should know how to follow trail markings and be comfortable hiking primitive trails. Note that cell phone service is sketchy, or non-existent, on this end of the island. The Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve usually sponsors a couple of guided hikes on these trails in autumn.

Opened in 1958 through the efforts of summer residents Leo and Bella Capser, Madeline Island Museum was donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society in the late 1960's. More than fifty years after opening, the original museum looks very much like it did back in 1958, chock-full of fascinating objects and artifacts from one of the richest historical collections in Wisconsin.
The small but exhibit full Museum is very professionally done. A modest admission charge opens the door to a most interesting exhibit of Native American and early settler history with a large number of artifacts and a very interesting video about the settlement of the Apostle Islands. There were two natives in the Museum who gave personal updates about the Indian tribes in Northern Wisconsin. It was a splendid place to spend a rainy afternoon.

Beautiful public beach, scenic overlook into Big Bay Lagoon.
On a whim, we decided to go camping for the weekend of Fourth of July. We called several campgrounds along the north shore but most of the campgrounds were already full. Thankfully, Rand at Big Bay Town Park offered to place us on a wait list....several hours later he called back to say that there was one available! Not only was the campground host friendly and helpful but the grounds and facilities were beautiful and well-kept! Bathrooms clean, quiet at nighttime, and safe-feeling! We loved that we could walk down to the beach right from the campground or take a quick 6 mile drive with our motorcycle to town for breakfast. Madeline Island is a gem with lots to do - you just have to look for it! Can’t wait to go back!
