La Pine State Park

Reviewed By H2HummerTime - La Center, Washington

This was our first time staying at a state park in Oregon. It was very nice (and hot!). We tubed down the Deschutes from the road to the left after the pet exercise area to the bridge. It was a little nerve racking, as there are a TON of downed trees to run into. You need tough tubes and staying together was not easy, but we managed. Will take the rubber raft next time. Oh, and the water is freezing, but you probably already know that.
The campground is clean and well taken care of. We had full hookups and, unlike Crater Lake, had water. It is great for hiking, biking and 4 wheeling (notice my user name). If you want a relaxed, leisurely time in the river, the day use area is nice and the water is refreshing on a hot day.
There is LOTS to do around the area as well. Lava tubes, hike through an obsidian lava flow, several lakes. Basically, if you like to get out and about, this place offers endless opportunities. Or, if you are more laid back, the campgrounds are nice too with sites partially separated by pines, but not completely secluded.
I don’t have my horse anymore, but surrounding areas also offer lots of opportunity for horseback riding. I think there is a horse camp somewhere close by, maybe east on Recreation Rd. instead of West to La Pine State Park. But, don’t quote me on that, cuz we were all over the place.
The town of La Pine is a 20 min drive. It offers most anything you need. It has a few grocery stores, a few fast food joints, a few restaurants, etc. etc. It does NOT have a Walmart, but does have a BiMart (which you need a membership for) and even a dollar store. I found it more than satisfactory for picking up everything we needed, and then some. You’re not going to find anything better between there and Crater Lake.
All in all, this is a place worth visiting again.

Oregon Observatory at Sunriver

There’s no better place! The local elevation, pitch dark surrounding and crystal clear air make it perfect for star gazing. You won’t be lining up for one telescope. The Oregon Observatory is the largest astronomical viewing facility in the United States. Feast your eyes on far away galaxies. Recognize the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter. Witness a meteor shower. Get a glimpse of globular clusters, nebula and deep space binary stars.

Reviewed By Hollyrik - Bellevue, Washington

Anyone spending time in SunRiver should drop by at least one evening to this sky-watching spot. Although forest fire smoke made for less than perfect star-gazing during eclipse week in Central Oregon, the astronomy geeks who work here made our visits an interesting and educational event. Fully private facility has an amazing collection of telescopes to seek out everything from the Moon to Andromeda.

East Lake

A beautiful lake with many outdoor activities and camping accommodations.

This lake is part of Newberry Crater, and is a non motor lake, so ideal for kayaking or canoeing. Best in the morning since the wind typically gets up around need. Nearby are two key attractions -hiking on the Obsidian flow, which is spectacular, and driving (or hiking) up to the lookout on top of Paulina Peak. On a clear day one can see from Mt Hood in the north to Mt Scott next to Crater Lake in the south - almost the full length of Oregon!

This was a very fun tour. It started out with a lot of short biking experiences and some longer hikes to the water falls. The hikes were downhill and strenuous coming back up. The guides allowed ample time at each waterfall to play and they were very involved making sure everyone stayed safe and knew what to do. The water experiences themselves were worth the trip. There were about 20-22 people in our group, but it seemed like a good enough number to manage and they allowed lee time between bikers to avoid stirring up dust and riding on the next biker's tire. Unfortunately, they didn't segregate out the slower people, which I think they should have allocated to the end of the line as my kids kept riding up on those who were riding the brakes the entire time so they didn't enjoy the experience as much had they had faster bikers in front of them. We biked / hiked around flowering plants so there were lots of wasps during our visit so not good for people who may be highly allergic or afraid. After the last waterfall there was a 3-3.5 mile bike ride to the bottom, which was nice after all the other short biking stints. Would definitely recommend the tour.

This privately owned 18 hole golf course was a true pleasure to golf. The course sits on 227 acres under pine trees with perfectly groomed fairways and tees. The green fees were very reasonable with new carts and a well equipped club house with a small cafe.

Lava Cast Forest Trail

Formed ca 6000 years ago by Newberry volcano flow, the cylindrical casts are amazing & truly look they were made by ancient civilizations. There's an easy one mile paved loop that was highlighted by fall colors & colonization by lichens & new vegetation. Warning: the 9-mile gravel road is very washboardy & took us about 20-30 minutes to reach the site. It's well-worth the effort--an awesome, educational experience.

An interesting find. The best part was the ranger talk, which explained a lot about the seismic/volcanic origins of the whole region. The visitors center also had a very informative movie and some good displays on volcanoes. Views from the top of the volcano are nice when it's clear.

I have been on a number of motorcycle holidays around the world and MotoFantasy is one of the best.
A motorcycle holiday needs a number of elements: Great roads, great bikes, good company and comfortable accommodation. MotoFantasy has the lot.
There is a huge range of roads and scenery around the area, from snow covered mountains to red hot desert. The stable of bikes has something for everyone from sports bikes, through classics old and new, to cruisers for riding the genuine American dream. Doug and Gloria provide the warmest welcome and are great company either dining with the guests or entertaining in Doug's own bar ! Lastly, the lodges offer the typical American luxury accommodation with huge kitchen and lounge areas for socialising and comfy beds for a deep sleep at the end of a long day on the road.

If you love your bikes, you won't be disappointed.
