Barcelona feels a bit surreal – appropriate, since Salvador Dali spent time here and Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed several of the city’s buildings. Stepping into Gaudí’s Church of the Sacred Family is a bit like falling through the looking glass - a journey that you can continue with a visit to Park Güell. Sip sangria at a sidewalk café in Las Ramblas while watching flamboyant street performers, then create your own moveable feast by floating from tapas bar to tapas bar.

This well maintained and very clean Spa is located at the Axel Hotel in the gayxample area of Barcelona. The spa itself and the steam rooms are excellent and the pool is incredibly relaxing. Management is firm about everyone wearing their swim suits; this is a legitimate business and very professional. I spent a week at the Axel Hotel and treated myself to three wonderful massages by Marcos, Dennis, and Fernando respectively. Each was well-trained and had expert technique -- but I would ask for Fernando again if I was to return. The staff at 33 Wellness is accommodating and exceptionally welcoming. Thank you, Maria! It has a separate street entrance in addition to access through the hotel. Highly recommended!

What a gem this small cocktail bar is!! Emmanuel had just opened for the evening when we arrived to sample some truly inspired cocktails in outlandish glassware and/or other awesome presentation features. It was early on Saturday evening and on a holiday weekend so we had the place to ourselves at first. Emmanuel’s skills behind the bar certainly didn’t disappoint with the three of us each ordering a different concoction (DD was traveling with us) in very different styles. All delicious, all worth re-ordering, but we wanted to try more variety from the menu so we did. We also got the benefit of Emmanuel’s creativity and ability to hone in on what you wanted in your next drink. First, Emmanuel created a custom cocktail based on what DD liked about her first drink and she was even happier with that one’s unique flavors. I’m coming down with a cold so after a delightful Scotchman’s Curative and a fun Miss Trouble, he created a wonderful whiskey-based drink with honey and herbs and served it in a teacup, with a teapot alongside that was “smoking”! DH had enjoyed the L’Atlantique served in what looked like an octopus, and then a truly surprising blend served in two test tubes, with straws built into each tube so you draw from each side simultaneously as you drink. Amazing! Then Emmanuel created a riff on a Rusty Nail for DH since they were out of Drambui at the moment. The result was a tribute to the Rusty Nail, but had its own unique herbalness to it. We also wanted some fish and chips, which are delivered by a nearby restaurant, and when Emmanuel called in our order shortly after we sat down, they advised that we wait a few minutes while they got things going there, too. Boy was that good advice! The fries had a little spice to them and the fish was absolutely perfect. As we were preparing to leave, I chatted with another patron who had recently arrived at the bar (another visitor from the US). Before we could go, Emmanuel poured a new cocktail as a set of shots for the four of us—we three and the newest arrival—and sent us off with a hearty farewell. If we can fit in another visit to the The Bowery before we leave Barcelona, we certainly will!
