Pilot Mountain

Great views of the countryside may be enjoyed from the summit.

Reviewed By RiverRoadPhotography - Oak Ridge, New Jersey

During our Winter Getaway from NJ, we spent a week in Florida at a lovely Airbnb on Anastasia Island before heading up to Zirconia, NC to visit a cousin. The purpose of visiting the Pilot Mountain area was to check out Rustic Trail Teardrop Trailers which is a family owned and run small camper builder. Having read Facebook posts from others, decided to take a trip up as the sun was setting...and we were treated to a gorgeous sunset with an unusually cold for this time of year hike to the lookout of Pilot Mountain. Took lots of photos and have shared them with others who also can't believe what a special place this is. We will certainly plan a return to this area just to explore this mountain more in the future. Can only imagine how beautiful the view is in the Fall!

I'd driven by Pilot Mountain many times, but never realized that you could actually drive up & explore the top! Although you can't actually get to the *very* top, there is a good trail to hike around it, with varied levels of difficulty depending on your skill level. There are 3 main trails, with branches off of each. There is a restroom facility, and a great lookout view with picnic benches & charcoal grilles available. All in all, a great place to visit for a hiking adventure, a picnic, or just to enjoy the beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains!

Divine Llama Vineyards

I'm a sweet wine drinker, so I only found 3 wines that I liked but I loved the atmosphere of this winery. There is a nice covered area and rocking chairs outside, couple small tables and chairs inside. There are corn hole games for the younger crowd. You could easily bring a picnic and enjoy the afternoon. LOVED seeing the Llama mamas and their babies! We didn't hike down to see the daddies. They also sell the wool from the llamas and a few items that have been by a local artist. Be sure to try their cheese plate as a snack with your wine!

The friends with whom I did this hike are avid hikers from New England and I hike constantly in North Carolina so we were all in the mood for this hike.

The trail to the summit is very good. At first you find yourself on a wide paved walkway which seems like you will be doing much in the way of what I consider hiking but that changes relatively quickly. It transitions to a very well graded, clean trail of similar width and eventually turns into the kinds of better single-track trails we see in most of the North Carolina parks.

A lot of the approach is pretty easy but there is a section heading up to the summit that is fairly steep, mostly well-constructed stairs. Occasionally you are on larger rocks and some of the trail becomes a tad rooty but not bad. In general, particularly since the length of the walk to the summit is less than a mile and a half, most reasonably able hikers could do this easily. Pacing is clearly the only thing you have to pay attention to individually.

Once you reach the summit the rewards are extraordinary. There are numerous rock outcroppings cantilevered out over what feels like an abyss when you venture out on some of them. Photo-ops abound. There is one thing that makes this place fabulous for some, and probably pretty dreadful for others.

You will find yourself at some precipitous drop offs and there are absolutely no guard rails of any kind to keep you from going over an edge. People who have any trouble with heights or edges need to not get close to any of the big overhanging rocks on the summit. For those of us who like the feeling of nothing between us and the nature we have hiked up to see, it is fantastic.

We didn't have time to explore the waterfall trails but I will save those for the next time I find myself in this area.

The park is about a 45 minute drive from Winston-Salem and is one of the most pleasant surprises I have had in all my years in North Carolina. If you enjoy outdoor hiking to truly spectacular view spots, this is one you cannot miss.

We took our 7 and 13 year old boys and the whole family just loved it. The place is absolutely beautiful- in a gorgeous valley next to a little river. There are goats and chickens, dogs, and a donkey- always a plus to have a few animals around. Keith, the owner, has a wonderful and calm manner with people. He has 11 kids and knows how to joke with kids and put people at ease. Aaron, our other guide, was just precious as well. We felt very safe and just had a great time. It can be difficult to find stuff our boys enjoy doing together bc of the 6 year age difference but this choice was a winner!!

I knew I would like this place just by looking in the windows. It's not a large place (only about 25 dealers) but it has a lot of collectibles (that's what we shop for). We aren't into fine antiques. A few of the booths were jumbled and tight to move around in but mostly it was easy to get around.

I collect vintage pigs and I bought 3 pig banks (mommy, daddy, and little girl) that I fell in love with.

The shops are in an old seed mill. The first floor has some unique shops but only two were open the day we were there (the music shop and the general store). The Mill Stone General Store sells old fashioned candy, soaps, candles, wines, gourmet foods, things made by local artisans, jewelry, etc. Old Muddy's Music Shop has musical instruments, audio equipment, gift shop, and even offers music lessons.

Tobaccoville Village Park

Reviewed By cheryl h - Durham, North Carolina

We just stumbled upon this park and decided to get a take-out lunch somewhere and come back to eat it here. Tobaccoville was given its name because of a plug chewing tobacco factory located here. It was also the mail route in the 1800s that ran between Mt. Airy and Winston-Salem.

The park was very nice sitting on 14 acres. They have a covered picnic area as well as scattered picnic tables around the park. There is a 1/3 mile gravel walking trail around the park but it doesn't offer much shade. You will also find an old tobacco barn, tennis courts, baseball field, playground and lots of open green space. A perfect place for a picnic and stretching your legs while you are on a long back roading trip.
