Ubara Risokyo

Reviewed By midoriu864 - Minato, Japan

The hills around here are riddled with caves, tunnels, and shrines carved into the rocks. To the North of Ubara Beach, there's an ancient, abandoned shrine if you search around a bit (be CAREFUL, the rocks are steep, slippery, and can collapse).
You can easily spend a day or two hiking around here, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you were already into that sort of thing.

Beautiful beach near Katsuura and Onjuku in Chiba. Perfect to visit during a Chiba daily excursion (2-3 hours from Tokyo) . Visit after walking around the fishermen's traditional housing and enjoy traditional Japanese food nearby.

Katsuura Undersea Park

Reviewed By Tina1234_12 - Olivet, France

It is a wonderful place to discover wild marine life up close. Many different types of fishes swim around the tower. The tower itself is in a spectacular location. The walk to the tower is, in itself, a very scenic experience. Wonderful for kids who love marine life. Although it is called the Katsuura Undersea Observatory, the closest train station is actually Ubara. Ubara is a wonderfully sleepy fishing village. We would have loved to stay there. There is a signposted little hike through the village and up to the hills. The Observatory, museum and the hike make a very fine day trip. We absolutely loved it!

Tomisaki Shrine

Reviewed By midoriu864 - Minato, Japan

Probably the nicest shrine in town, it is reached up a few different long stone staircases. Could be a bit of a hike for anyone not in good shape. At the top is a rather typical (yet still pretty) shrine, with a couple hidden ones, too.
The view of town is half the fun.
In March (?) they have a huge doll festival here, but in October the place was closed and under construction lol.

Morning Market

Local older people whose family work at fisheries industry sell some fresh fish and seaweed on every Sunday morning. Prices were inexpensive and really fresh, taste was rich. They were so friendly and told us how to cook these fish. They couldn't speak English, so Non-Japanese speaker would feel hard to communicate with them.

Cape Hachiman Park

Reviewed By mat_mak - Tokyo Prefecture, Japan

The park is located on the long peninsula protruding east of Katsuura Bay. In the cape surrounded by the sea there was the Katsuura Castle in the Edo period. The princess who lived in the castle became secondary wife of Ieyasu Tokugawa who was a Japanese national governor. Now her statue is set up in the park.

Katsuura Big Hina Doll Festival

This festival began in 2001 when the city received 7000 hina dolls from Katsuura town in Tokushima prefecture. Nowadays, 30,000 hina dolls are used to decorate the city, enveloping it in a colorful atmosphere. The 60 steps at Tomisaki Jinja Shrine in Hama-Katsuura are decorated with 1500 dolls. Visitors are treated to magical scenery when the dolls are illuminated in the evening. The highlight of the festival is the 6000 dolls on display in the hall of Katsuura City Art and Cultural Exchange Center. During the festival, there is also a doll procession and a dance parade with children in costumes.

Ubara Beach

Ubara is definitely the nicest of the Beaches in the Katsuura area. This is quite off the beaten path for anyone besides surfers, and you're likely to be the only foreigner here, but the water is clear and the beach is clean, aside from the occasional seaweed.
