This 65 mile paved byway from Kamas, UT to the WY border is my favorite alpine drive in Utah and one of my favorites any where in the US. It has it all-wildlife, waterfalls, panoramic views, lots of mountain lakes, snow-capped mountains, wilderness, forests, and meadows with wildflowers. There are numerous campgrounds in the National Forest along with places to hike, hunt, backpack and fish.
The road is open seasonally and closes 15 miles east of Kamas and 30 miles south of Evanston, WY because of snow, however you can still snowmobile, cross country ski, etc. I have been here in mid June when it is still closed and ran into snow on September 15th when I was here this year. Weather can change quickly. I left Kamas on a clear, sunny day yet ran into so much snow in the higher elevations my windshield wipers could barely keep up, roadway was completely snow covered and signs too snow covered to read. There is a nominal fee which you can pay at a Ranger Station or at one of the "self-service" kiosks along the route. There is much less traffic if you go midweek.
Some of my favorite stops (in order as you drive northbound) include Slate Gorge Overlook where a short trail leads to a view of a 200 foot canyon, Provo Falls Overlook (it is about a block walk from the parking lot to the falls but you can hear them and see a glimpse from the parking area), Bald Mountain Overlook (highest point on the drive at 10,687 feet) to see 11,947 foot Bald Mountain, and Mirror Lake which is almost too beautiful for words as you walk around the lake through the forest. If you have only time to stop at one place, I would suggest Mirror Lake. There are restrooms (along the route there are also pit toilets in some parking areas) and interpretive signs here.
It was not just the snow and resulting winter wonderland that made my Sept. 15th trip this year thrilling. Because of all the snow, over 1300 wild mountain sheep that reside in the higher elevations in warm weather decided to migrate that day and use the road through the byway to reach their winter quarters. Usually I am thrilled to see any mountain sheep-this was beyond my wildest dream and I was glad I could use my phone to have video. Several miles into the migration, I came upon ranchers on horseback, some sheep dogs, and a sheriff deputy all observing the situation. No one knows when the sheep will migrate. I felt lucky to have been there to observe such an event that made this my best trip ever on the byway.

I was in charge of arranging a few snow activities for a corporate group in February 2018. Originally I had booked dog sledding with a different company, but due to unseasonably warm temperatures, that company's dog run trails had melted and they cancelled on me the day my employees were supposed to be picked up.
I called around to several other operators to see if anyone would be able to accommodate us. Jordan from North Forty was able to make this happen for my group, and we booked seven sleds over the course of a two day period.
Everyone who went out on the dog sled rides had a wonderful time. From the moment we were picked up from our hotel until the moment we were dropped off, everything went smoothly. We were picked up on time, everyone was kind and courteous, and the dogs were amazing. They are so friendly and cute. And they get really excited about going for a run.
My husband and I had a musher named Mac and he took really awesome photos of us both in and out of the sled. Thank you Mac for your excellent photography skills.
The only slightly negative thing I would say is that unfortunately the location of the dog sledding is about a 45 minute drive away from Deer Valley, so we spent quite a bit of time traveling to and from. But for me it was absolutely worth it.
I highly recommend North Forty and happily book activities with them again.
Thank you Jordan, Mac, Ryan, and the whole team for a wonderful experience.

My husband and I and another couple traveled to Park City for skiing, and decided to take a day trip to snowmobile. I found a $20 discount on the VisitParkCity.com site for Recreation Ventures, so we booked with them. We opted for the 2 hour guided tour, which was $110/person + tax (plus gratuity) after the coupon. None of us had ever snowmobiled before, though we all own jet skis, which we found to be very similar.
It was about a 25 minute ride from our house in Historical Park City to the Recreation Ventures site off Hwy 35. It was a beautiful spring day (in the high 50s) and we were skeptical that there'd be enough snow on the ground nearby to snowmobile, but the owner assured us there was. He met us 8:15am and got us fitted with our helmets and boots ($5 extra, but well worth it). He brought along his dog, Judy, who was as friendly as she was enthusiastic. Once we signed the waivers and paid, we all drove up to the Uinta National Forest. Where, I'm glad to report, there was plenty of snow!
After they unloaded the vehicles (plus one to spare, thankfully!), we got an incredibly brief intro to our snowmobiles ("This is the accelerator; this is the brake"), then we were off!
Wow! We had more fun than humans should be allowed! The national park was gorgeous and the snowmobiles were awesome. We went really fast right out of the gate, but it was pretty straight, and the terrain pretty easy. I was glad to have use of a brake, though, which is something jet skis don't have. We stopped a few times to get our picture taken, but mostly we just navigated trails in the beginning.
Bo then took us to the crest of the mountain where the views were outstanding. Nearby was a "bowl," where we were given as much time as we wanted to play around. It was nice to be given some space to familiarize ourselves with the vehicles, and to not have to stick to a trail. We buzzed around for about 20 minutes or so.
Afterward, he took us onto some more challenging trails and one really steep hill. We never tipped over, though there was one narrow pass where I thought I might. Then we headed back to the parking lot via a closed road, that allowed us to go full throttle.
My only caution is that if you're not used to jet skis or snowmobiles, there wasn't much instruction. I assume Bo uses an "as needed" approach, and would have slowed down or provided more instruction, as required.
2 hours was the perfect amount of time, in my opinion. We never felt rushed and it seemed to last a long time. I'm not a skier, so I can say that this was by far the most fun I had in Park City. And it was very reasonable, even before the discount! I highly recommend it.
P.S. There was a restroom in the parking lot. I'd recommend you use it before you leave if you had 3 cups of coffee that morning.

chalk and cheese... Deer Valley beats PC on so many levels. Number of staff, excellent groomed slopes, wonderfully planned runs, great food. Once you have skied Deer Valley, you simply don't want to return to Park City I have skied nearly all the resorts in the West and Deer Valley was the best

So summer in Utah, gorgeous scenic byway and waterfalls. Well, it's a recipe for tourists... lots of them. So here is the thing. It's a great stop, they have restrooms, and hey, it's water.... ya gotta love waterfalls in the mountains. So think like a tourist, and do the opposite. Rather than waiting until mid morning, or just after lunch, go first thing in the morning... last thing in the evening. The bikers and large groups take time to get there during the day... so skip up there first, then mozy on up to Mirror Lake, and by the time the crowds get there you are already moving along.

When we visited, we hoped to be there during peak fall foliage. But, we missed by a week or so on October 17. Aspen Trees line the ends of the lake so I can see why it would be Aspen Mirror Lake. First week in October should have been super.
Well marked off Highway 14 near Duck Creek Village. Short gravel road drive back to lake and then a short trail to the lake.
We saw young families with children all fishing at the lake.

A huge facility with a lap pool with diving boards, hot tub and an spacious kids area, complete with a lazy river ride and a fun water slide. The water was clean and warm, so our three-generation group enjoyed it for several hours. Extremely reasonably priced, too. A bit tricky to find – it’s part of the town’s school complex – look for a giant building that looms over the neighborhood and a full parking lot! Was built as part of the SLC Olympics.

I've snowmobiled several times from the north side of the Unitas and have stayed at the bear river lodge three times (5 total nights). If you haven't seen the lodge(s) in the past few years, everything is bigger/better and nicer.
I'm tentative in writing a review because what makes this area some much fun to snowmobile in is that it's not very crowded and i like it that way. I'd take the terrain over west yellowstone any day, plus you don't have the wooped out trails to get to the fun terrain very long.
In short, beautiful area, great terrain, very nice place.
