Jingdezhen (or the Town of Jingde) is a prefecture-level city, previously a town, in northeastern Jiangxi province, China, with a total population of 1,554,000 (2007), bordering Anhui to the north. It is known as the "Porcelain Capital" because it has been producing pottery for 1,700 years. The city has a well-documented history that stretches back over 2,000 years.

If you are into chinese ceramics, this is a must see! The museum houses a number of buildings, displaying everything from how the clay is processed, to throwing, finishing, decoration and glazing. All the classical oven-types used in the production of chinese ceramics are presented in full size, and apparently at times also fired. I´m pretty sure you will get a much deeper understanding of chinese ceramics, a real aha-moment!

Jingdezhen is supposed to be the most important city for Chinese Ceramics (Porcelain) of the country. International recognized and admired, this is a recently open museum. There are some other museum with similar names (Jingdezhen/Ceramics) but this is the most important and where some of the most important pieces from the small museum (the Drangon Pearl Pagoda, for example) have been sent.
This is a new museum in the outskirts of the city. As it is so difficult to rent a car within China, unless you are with a group you will need a taxi to get there (and book another one for the way back). It opens at 9 in the morning, and the day we were there (3 hours and I wish we could have gone some more days) was almost empty. There was a couple of groups of school boys and girls, some Chinese visitors and us (the only westerns - maybe a 0.5%.
The quality of the pieces (I talk about porcelain which is the only subject of the Museum) is absolutely amazing. And most of the pieces are unknown and unpublished. Museography pretty good (with simple translations into English), very educational,... We only had time for one of the floors but we missed 2 of them. The quality of the pieces is really exceptional (most of them are pieces produced in Jingdezhen for the Forbidden City - same level than the ones at the National Museum in Beijing, Shanghai Museum and even Taipei).
By the end of 2017 a new speed train will join Shanghai to Jingdezhen in less than 3 hours. And then... the crowds will start visiting this amazing collection.
Ah! I don't think there was a tea/coffee room... but the shops in the basement - pretty good selection of reproductions. We missed the floor of Cultural Revolution Pottery... and I saw some really interesting things in the brochure.
If you like Chinese Porcelain this is a MUST SEE!

As the China's "Porcelain Capital", Jingdezhen is the one of Four Great Towns in China. For me, the most attractive stuff is the ancient ceramics industry. And the spots to learn something about porcelain is Ceramic History and Culture Zone, Gaoling-Yaoli Scenic Area, Fuliang Ancient Government Office, Deyu Ecological Garden, China Porcelain Garden, and Jingdezhen Official Kiln Museum

I loved this museum-like park. I went on a weekday morning. It wasn't crowded. The landscapes, old buildings, kilns exhibits were lovely and clean. I strolled here and there among the buildings and garden areas.
The ceramics in the many little shops were expensive, so I just didn't worry about it. You're not really there to buy stuff anyway. There are places to sit and relax. The exhibits are interesting. Take your time. No rush...no worries.
The fee is worth the money (approx $18 USD) for nice landscaping, clean restrooms, interesting reconstructed kilns, and live exhibits.

Taoxichuan Ceramic Art Avenue is really an unique very well restored new are in Jingdezhen that unifies within Heritage, Libraries, Ceramic and Arts-Crafts Galleries and Studios, as much as Restaurants, Cafeterias, Hoteles, etc.
It is housed in several Ceramic Plate factories from early 20th century and represents the city's soul and history.
The restoration of the area is excellent and continously is adding more artist studios as well as kilns, studios, artist centers (as the Scandinavian center) with international aim but from the Jingdezhen personality. I think though still is not very well know, is getting more and more well known and will be internationally admired in the future. Whoever has done the project has a good taste and vision. The references to the traditional product of the city in the material of the decoration of the are is absolutely intelligent and smart.
In the various buildings (which get more alive in the afternoon and specially at dinner time) attracts lots of Chinese tourists that go for dinner to it but also visit the numerous ceramic studios (all absolutely remarkable, both traditional and contemporary) and boutiques. When the speed train from Shanghai at the end of this year could link Jingdezhen with Shanghai in less than 3 hours, this will be a very busy and wished place to visit.
I cannot explain how much I admired the place and what is happening there. There is a very good hotel (the Manju Hotel) and many very good restaurants. We discovered one called Steak Kitchen where they had not only Chinese and Japanese food, but really good for meat and fish, as well for European wines. But there was also several fantastic Burger places and many galleries and ceramic studios were to serve coffed (capuccino) and cakes.
In some of the pictures I took can be seen several buildings from the 1940s/50s in very bad condition, that are being pulling down around the whole city, and will be replaced soon by modern buildings that are already changing the profile of the city.
