Mount Monadnock State Park

The climb to the top of the 3,165-foot-peak is a popular activity in this picturesque park.

Reviewed By Hoffer98 - Dayton, Ohio

We came to Jaffrey specifically to climb Mt Monadnock and stayed at an amazing Airbnb property (A Tree House on the lake). I would highly recommend this for a two person party. The forecast was for rain but we had prepared for this. The entrance to the park was very easy to find and clearly signed. The staff there was very accommodating and gave us great tips and recommendations. We started out at 7am but I would recommend getting there just a little before sunrise if you want to avoid the crowds. The beginning of the hike is easy with headlamps. We chose to hike the White Dot trail up. The first half of the hike was not to challenging but be prepared because the ascent to the top after the Whtie Dot and White Cross trail split is filled with rock scrambling and some challenges. There a a few spots on the ascent that give you slight breaks and some areas as you get closer to the summit to peer off onto overlooks. The trail is very well maintained and marked. They do an amazing job maintaining this trail. I would recommend hiking poles and bring grip tips for the ends to use on rock. I would also highly recommend hiking boots and plenty of fluid (I went through 84 ounces on a rainy day). Bring layers because the weather can change quickly so be prepared for a windy and possibly cold summit. There is rock scrambling as you approach the summit so you will need to be comfortable with finding grip holds. It was quite challenging in the rain but we took our time and were careful. The reviews on All Trails and here will help. Read them. Know your skill level. Do not underestimate this climb. I am not a seasoned hiker and I wouldn't consider my self a beginner but this hike presented itself with challenges and I was glad I had read the reviews prior to climbing. If you are a seasoned hiker and are good with a map, compass and GPS there are other trailheads to follow up and down the mountain. You won't run into near the amount of people if you choose these but should be good with a compass,, map GPS etc....We chose the Whtie Cross trail to descend and I would recommend this. It is not as steep but again presents itself with challenges. You will be rocking hopping most of the way down and there were a few areas I chose to Butt Slide but be cautious because you gain speed rapidly on a rainy day.........). You will spend about 75% of your time on rocks on the way down. But easily managed if you take your time. The White Cross trail is very well marked and maintained. I used my poles quite a bit on the way down mostly do to the rain and I was happy i had the rubber grips on the ends. Enjoy this hike! Start early at or before sunrise to avoid the crowds or if you aren't interested in the views do this on a rainy day but be prepared......My compliments to the staff at Mount Monadnock! We will return for a sunny day climb. Just an FYI you do have to pay a $5 per person (and I think there is a family rate) to park but please note that it is worth every dime to help them maintain this amazing mountain.

Cathedral of the Pines

Reviewed By redeco - Warren, Massachusetts

Cathedral of the Pines is exactly as its name would suggest - an outdoor sanctuary in a natural setting with views of Mount Monadnock. The site is non-denominational and is dedicated to all Americans who serve the nation. Congress recognized the site in 1957 as a National Memorial to American War Dead.

The visitor center is staffed with friendly interpreters who are more than helpful. The gardens are beautifully tended, and the Women's Memorial Bell Tower is inspirational to say the very least. The main altar contains rocks and stones from each of our 50 states and from every President since Harry Truman. There is also a fine small museum, and a gift shop.

I particularly loved the Mother Chapel on the hillside below the main sanctuary. The smaller chapel has a wonderful little waterfall behind the altar. Charming. Take time to walk the paths. Each is punctuated by plaques and monuments placed by loving families. This is a wonderfully spiritual place - an Oasis of Calm for our very troubled world. Enjoy.

Definitely a great thing to cross off your bucket list. Dom and Jimmy did our class.
You start off by watching a quick video, picking out your sunglasses and then head into your "classroom"
The instructors quickly went over the rules. Stay hydrated, know your surroundings, no horseplay, etc...
They go over all the equipment and get started right away. They quickly show you how to make the first item (the clear flower) and then you're up. It can be a little intimidating because it's so fast paced but Jimmy definitely talked with us and made us feel better.
You're able to make 4 items. A clear flower, a colored flower, a paper weight, and a clear ornament. You can't take the items home right away, as they are over 2,000 degrees. Since we live over 2 hours away, we had them shipped to us.
Even though we went in a little nervous, all in all, it was a great time. Lots of fun.

I visited Covey House with 2 friends. The proprioter was gracious and welcoming. After examining the many interesting decor & gift options, and choosing a few, we headed to the cafe area. A glass refrigerator case displayed the items available for the day. There was no menu. We asked Chef Alan about salads & were told he could make us a " side salad"...Although served on paper plates with plastic utensils, it was one of the best salads I have ever eaten! Greens, melon, apple, carrot, & more, dressed with a light & tasty vinagrette. The cafe area is a small room, decorated with interesting items, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Mooselick Brewery

What a pleasant surprise to find a nano brewery in Troy, New Hampshire! The small, intimate wooden building houses both the brewing facility and the taproom where "of age" folks can sample current brews through taps in the wall connected to the tanks on the other side. The brewery is connected to Monadnock Berries also located in Troy (check out both websites).
If you like beer, the brewery experience and supporting local enterprise, this is definitely a destination for you. The friendly staff will tell you that some brews use fruit from Monadnock Berries and some are traditionally brewed. The Java Moose Stout uses Prime Roast Coffee from Keene among other ingredients and is an impressive local partnership producing an impressive local product. Bravo Mooselick Brewery and Bravo Troy!
