Neolithic Britons (or nature-worshiping Druids or space aliens, depending on who you listen to) began assembling Stonehenge on the plains of Salisbury, England more than 5000 years ago. Its original purpose is still under debate ... but there is no mystery (or purpose, really) behind the Texas Hill Country's version. Stonehenge II was created as an art project by the late Al Shepperd, a Hill Country Arts Foundation patron, and his neighbor Doug Hill more than 20 years ago on Shepperd's land in nearby Hunt, Texas. Stonehenge II It took nine months to build and is 90 percent the height and 60 percent the width as the original. Giving free range to his fanciful notion, Shepperd added two 13-foot Easter Island head replicas for good measure. After Shepperd's death, the megalithic circle along with its Easter Island sidekicks needed a new home. In an effort to preserve this true Texas landmark, the sculptures were relocated stone-by-stone to their final resting place beside the Guadalupe River on the campus of the Hill Country Arts Foundation.
Saved from a Texas ranch that changed ownership, the replica of Stonehenge is a nice relaxing no cost site. A history of the reproduction is posted and the replica presents great photo opportunities, especially at sunset. Great for kids. Also on the grounds are three replica Maori heads.

Stand inside the 7' center chamber of the 77'7" tall, $2,000,000 Resurrection cross located on the 1930' mountain in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. "The Empty Cross" has been described as the most scripturally symbolic cross ever created. Experience God's presence, love, power, mercy, forgiveness and miracles as you read through the plaques affixed to the inside walls of the magnificent cross. The 77’ Kerrville Cross is the centerpiece of The Sculpture Prayer Garden still being developed as a gift to the community and to the Kingdom of God. The admission to experience this unique attraction is FREE. Hours open to the public: 6 AM to 12 Midnight; Open All Year!
I struggle with my faith, but oh the emotional conviction when I hear music, sermons, and prayers or see things like this. Not sure if I categorize myself as religious but I love this prayer garden. Made me wish my grandmother was here to see it with me, but at least I was with my dad and he seemed to love it as much as she would have. (I think if I wasn't afraid to have to answer to a higher power upon my death, I would most definitely be a horrid person)
If you visit as a pilgrimage may it be annual, weekly, occasionally or just once, you won't be disappointed. People were deep in prayer and left beautiful heartfelt prayers written on rocks around the garden near the cross. Don't write on the tables or anywhere else, just use the rocks. They provide markers near the empty cross on tables with reading material you are welcome to take if you'd like.
Even if you are not a person of faith, anyone for the desire to see art, experience new things, or be knowledgeable and well-rounded will appreciate this beautiful and peaceful garden. The views of Kerrville are gorgeous; you can see for miles at the top of the hill, I mean if you stop to take it all in. When the weather is nice and you are fit you can park at the bottom and hike up, it was the plan but I got lazy so we cruised to the top and they have designated and are plentiful in parking areas.
It's easy to get to; right off the highway and you can see if from a ways. The entrance at the bottom of the hill has the bust of "The Coming King". Don't drive straight to the cross at the top there's more to see here. "It Is Finished" are three nails or spikes, the middle one points to the cross, also "Mary, Mother of Jesus", reflecting on the crucifixion and holding the crown of thorns. Don't miss the "Twelve Stones", they are tucked away in a corner. Now drive or walk to the top, for the last seven works of art done by the artist, Max Greiner Jr.

Copper Cactus is great. There are lots of eclectic art work, Mexican pottery, Texas style decorator items and the list goes on. Darrin Potter is the owner, artist in residence and Captain of the USS Minnow, a Boat & Breakfast behind the trading post. It's an old boat that Darrin updated inside for a comfortable, unique B & B experience. It's located on Old Ingram Loop and there's plenty to do within walking distance (there's a path through to a few places from Copper Cactus) one is Chatfield's, an artisan/blacksmith one of a kind jewelry shop, next to that is The Wine Room, a nice place to stop off for a great atmosphere, a delectable choice of wines and the staff there is knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming to say the least. Inside The Wine Room is Hill Country Photography for sale as well as The Whitetail Candle Co. with locally made soy based candles that are outstanding. Below on the lower loop are a variety of shops all within walking distance of one another such as an antique shop or 2 or 3, a great place to eat called Tonya's Texas Our House BBQ, a nice lamp shop, a high end men's shop, an art gallery, a shop that crafts one of a kind belt buckles (I understand that people come from all over to order custom buckles) so check that out to. A restaurant called Chi Cho's is there too with dynamic, fresh fare. A hidden gem of a Shopping Loop in Ingram. Don't miss it!

While in Kerrville, we stopped to enjoy the scenic and relaxing river trail. There were a few people fishing in the Guadulupe River but most people were out walking like us. We saw numerous deer, including a very large buck. Lots of people walking their dogs. Very nice.

The Museum of Western Art, formerly the Cowboy Artist of America Museum, is open Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. It is located 65 miles NW of San Antonio just off I-10, and is a short drive from downtown Kerrville. Larger-than-life style western bronzes dot the exterior grounds. There are several galleries inside (allow 90 minutes to go through), showcasing artwork by craftsmen and women who have devoted their artistic career to preserving the legends of the American West. Young children will enjoy the Journey West Children's Gallery, a hands-on interpretive experience of life on a wagon train. A small museum store sells prints and original art done by local artists along with other western memorabilia. An extensive western research library is on site as well. An annual art sale and exhibition is held each fall.
I live in Central Texas and tell all my friends and family what a treasure we have in Kerrville. Folks I encounter who have been to the Museum have always had a pleasant experience on their visit. The amazing pieces are the first thing mentioned, but previous visitors never fail to express how beautiful the building itself is and how well they were treated by the knowledgable staff and volunteers.

This is a cute place to feel like you're in the Old West. Historic buildings give you that old feel. They're all antique and junk shops now. Fun to spend about an hour here.

A 500-acre park just off the shores of the Guadalupe River: great for fishing.
I stayed overnight in one of the mini-cabins while on a motorcycle trip through the Hill Country west of Austin and San Antonio. The park was clean and well-organized. The staff were great. The river was very refreshing after a day of riding. The campground shower was clean.
As others have said the mini-cabins are very spare. One room, two bunkbeds with 4-inch matresses, no bedding or towels provided, wall unit AC, power, table and 4 chairs inside, picnic table outside, water tap outside and power there too.

Went to this shop a year ago. Great variety of interesting and affordable (big plus to me!) items inside the store and outside in the back. Purchased a statue and some hilarious votive candles as well as an earring holder, just to give you an idea of the variety.
The owner was hospitable, informative (recommended a good restaurant) and lots of fun to talk to. Overall a great place to stop. Worth the time.
