Direction Island

Reviewed By 740MikeG - Joondalup, Australia

My wife and I recently spent a fantastic week on Cocos Keeling Island. We took the opportunity to take the twice weekly ferry service from West Island to Direction Island. Couple of things to consider: There is nothing on the Island by way of services or supplies. Whatever you want to eat or drink or do you need to bring it with you. There are toilet facilities and the local WiFi hotspot and some shelters on the shoreline. That’s about it. Trees and grass areas as well as the beach itself. You come here for the snorkeling really and it is fantastic in the area known as the rip. Why the Rip? Because that is what You are going to get into. The ocean rushes through a gap between Islands, from the open ocean into the interior lagoon. If you are not a confident swimmer, I suggest stick to other areas. It is safe if you are confident and not prone to panic. We did it several times. Make sure you bring fins (flippers) otherwise you are in for a tough long swim back to shore. I recommend reef shoes to get into the rip as the shore there is rocky and corral debris, not sand. The rest of the main beaches are lovely soft sand though. We loved it so much we came back for a second time on the next available ferry day. If you have your own boat access or want to charter a boat you can go whenever you choose. (Ferry service is only $5 Aus return.) Highly recommended activity if snorkeling is your thing.
