Anne Kolb Nature Center

Reviewed By Loopytunes - Nashville, United States

Uncrowded visit on the fourth of July. Greeted by iguanas of various sizes along the road. This was suggested by my twenty-something son who lives here for a quick stop to get a feel for some Florida nature! The overlook was closed due to construction bbut it was so sweltering that we probably would've skipped it anyway. The nature center was cool and had several interesting exhibits. Spied several types of butterflies outside as well as crabs near the water. Didn't take long to be tired of the heat but it was a fun little stop. Great for younger kids too.

ArtsPark at Young Circle

Reviewed By Arielfl - Coconut Creek, United States

f you have not been swung around the circle then you have not properly visited Hollywood Fl. The city of Hollywood was designed by founder Joseph Young. Unique to his design was the incorporation of three large circles of land located along the main boulevard. These circles became the sites of a ten-acre park which was originally named Harding Circle and later renamed Young Circle, a circle for the city hall complex, and the third circle for a military academy. If you have ever driven around the Artspark at Young Circle it is like a roundabout but on steroids. People race around it at high speeds while others frantically try to find the exit off. It's quite an experience if you miss your exit you will be swinging around again. Inside the circle is a large park where the city holds events. There is no parking in the actual circle so you need to find parking along one of the city streets or in the downtown parking garage. Normally it is not a problem but if there is an event it can be tricky. Inside the park is a bust of city founder Joseph Young, a covered playground, splash fountain, restrooms, visual arts pavilion features live glass blowing demonstrations, salsa dance classes, and an art gallery. An 2,500 guest amphitheater hosts free weekly concerts and events. Currently the city Christmas tree and Hanukkah display is set up here. The circle is the cultural arts heart of the city. It is also favored by the homeless residents of Hollywood. When there is events the police sweep them out but when you visit on your own it is best to keep aware of your surroundings. Other than that the landscaping is lovely and it is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.

I had not been to this location in many years, so I was interested in returning. I was in the area, and admission was free on non-holiday weekdays so I stopped in. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of wildlife: the most I have ever seen at this location. In just over an hour I saw an abundance of birds (egrets, herons, ibis, wood storks, cormorants, ducks, moorhens, coots), squirrels, and lizards (anoles and iguanas). It is a nice hike around the massive lake, or just to relax under the shade of the abundant oak trees. There had recently been a tropical storm, so the lake had overflowed some areas of the park that had to be detoured around. There were unfortunately a few negatives. Upon arriving I noticed that a homeless person living in a car overflowing with junk had obstructed part of the parking lot with their vehicle and was begging for change with a large sign saying, "We may be homeless, but we are still Christian" Yet no park staff were removing this illegal panhandler. While hiking the trail up a hill, I came close to being run over by a group riding loud motorbikes on the trails and grass around the lake, despite motor vehicles being prohibited on the hiking trails. I observed an employee in a truck eventually stop them and told them more than once to leave, but were ignored and taunted. At one point the employee chased them with the truck, but I don't know why they didn't just call the police to arrest those punks. The third negative was that the shoreline all around the lake was completely littered with trash, yet I saw no employees making any effort to remove it. Despite the negatives, I will still return, and I hope the Broward County Parks & Rec makes changes based on this review.

A great place if you want to do some food shopping, eat, and support local vendors. There's a huge variety of Latin American foods to try as well- delicious empanadas, arepas, salteñas, a variety of meats, and desserts. It's like a festival/marketplace. Outdoor and indoor market, it's hot in the summer, more fans would be helpful, but nice when the weather cools.

Hadn't been here in years but came on a weekday afternoon. No charge to enter the park on weekdays. $15 to rent a kayak for an hour and go through the mangroves and across the lake and wander in and out. We saw several herons and other birds. They said some before us had seen manatees but we didn't see any. But, it was a perfect way to spend an afternoon. Highly recommend.
