When travelling in the West, my son and I always enjoy stopping by the local rock shop to see what mineral and fossil specimens we can find and to, hopefully, add a few to our collection. We were very pleased to find that Things that Rock offered quite a few different local items at affordable prices. One of their specialties is rose quartz, relatively rare and originally discovered in the 1880’s in a large deposit in nearby Custer, we just had to pick-up a nice, well saturated specimen. Perhaps going a bit overboard, we also selected a piece of petrified wood that looks so much like wood, that you do not realize it is stone till you pick it up; an interesting piece of black tourmaline; and, my favorite, fossilized teeth from a Mesohippus, a small, extinct horse from 30 to 40 million years ago. The shop proprietors were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful so if you are interest in minerals, we would certainly recommend a stop at Things that Rock.

We used Mickelson Trail Adventures to shuttle us and our bikes from Hill City back to Custer after biking the Mickelson Trail, and the next day to shuttle us and our bikes from Hill City up to the Dumont Trailhead on the Mickelson Trail. They even stored our bikes overnight for us. You couldn't ask for a more courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable shuttle service!
