What an amazing trip down memory lane... remembering the days of riding these wonderful trams with the canvas doors in winter and summer... scrambling to get a seat after school.... the introduction of automated doors that kept the rain out! This is a wonderful place to take the family or just reminisce by yourself. All the teams are open and you can sit in the drivers seat and ring the "gong." You can even pull the "next stop" leather cord as many times as you like without the drivers door swinging open and the driver stopping the tram till whoever was pulling the cord owned up!
So many times I have been past the depot when it was operating and to now see inside where this collection is housed was a step back in time. Apart from the trams there is the training room and the historical display room with a great collection of memorabilia and videos. The shop has a great collection of videos as well.

An extensive suburban park with a good playground and a walking track around the outer perimeter. Perhaps the best thing about this park is the view to the city. A great spot to watch the sun set over Melbourne; canny locals come hear on New Year's Eve to get a hassle free view of the fireworks.

Central Gardens is surrounded in nearby streets by some attractive period housing and is a good respite from busy local roads.
It looks prim and proper, but I'd like to see more Australian natives planted to attract silvereyes and honeyeaters such as brush wattlebirds.
It is easily accessible by Metro train to Glenferrie station or on the number 16 cross-suburban Yarra Trams route.

Fantastic spot to walk your dog or check out the beautiful Yarra river. Parking is plentiful at Leonda or less ample parking on Fairview St. Check it out in conjunction with visit to tram museum. In fact it's actually a couple of parks in one. Fairview Park, Scottsburn st reserve and Wallen Rd reserve.

If you're in Hawthorn it's likely you'll notice a towering stone spire on the horizon. If you're interested in seeing this Tower up close, and seeing the historic building it sits on top of, find your way to the Uniting church. It's within walking distance of Auburn station and several tram routes.
The church (originally Methodist) was built in 1889-91, along with adjacent buildings (stables and such), and these days it is heritage listed. The Tower (which has an observation deck) is pretty remarkable. The church operates as a normal church, but the Tower is not routinely open for inspection. You should keep an eye on the website for future events and open days, and if you like you can join the Friends of the Auburn Tower. www.auburntowerfriends.org.au

The kind of museum that Melbourne does best. Founded by keen volunteers to maintain a great history of telecommunications. Can only be visited by appointment on Wednesdays. Worth a visit. Very easy to get too via public transport. Located just down from glenferrie station

Part of this park is comprised of sporting ovals and the rest has some forested areas. In the early morning the male toilets were open, but not the female ones, although there were women's aerobic classes going on. It is a pleasant area with many people walking themselves and their dogs.

The Yarra Bank Reserve is somewhat hidden below the elevation of the Bridge Road Bridge. With Gardens and old large trees it offers some protection from summer heat and sun, but still has grass for children to play on. The paths down from Bridge Road and Creswick Street are quite steep, but if coming by car there is a car park right at the gas barbeque area. It is great if there is a large group planning a BBQ/picnic. There are some walking and cycling options nearby.
