I remember riding this ferry as a kid at summer camp back in the 70's. I've been wanting to return and finally had the opportunity this summer. It's a short ride, about 20 minutes, and it's free. The river views are beautiful. It's a very relaxing ride. I hope to return and witness a river sunset.

The camp hosts have undoubtedly changed since the 2012 review which criticized the hosts. It's a small campground, but facilities are great, the marsh walking trail is outstanding, and nearby Swansboro is fun to visit. Outer loop has the most privacy, but all sites I looked at are large and level.

I’ll three of North Carolina aquariums are different. They have some similarities, but also unique. I like this one because it’s organized by region of the state and it flows nicely. It’s very educational and relaxing. I love the outside walkway and it’s great views. The kids love the climbing nets and the tire swing on the playground.

Pine Cliffs Recreation Area - Neusiok Trail

Reviewed By CarolinaTrekkers - Greensboro NC

This trail is a key coastal component of the North Carolina Mountains to the Sea Trail. A friend and I recently walked the entire 21 mile trail north to south, starting at Pine Cliffs and ending at Oyster Bay campground. I have the following observations for those considering doing this.

1. Walking the 21-mile route in one day is certainly doable. It requires 7-10 hours, depending on your pace. We did it in 8 1/2 hours, which included water (at least two liters), rest and snack breaks. We started about 8 a.m. and finished about 4:30 p.m. Our stops were usually about five minutes, and we stopped 4-5 times. Our 2.5 mph pace, including stops, was solid but certainly some walk faster, and some slower. You need to be comfortable that you can walk at least a 2 mph pace and finish before dark. If you eat a meal before starting, snack bars, nuts, water, etc. should hold you until dinner.

2. The trail has almost no uphill or downhill. Wear comfortable walking shoes, socks, and clothes, and carry a light day pack with a rain jacket, water, snacks, and a warmer layer if you think necessary.

3. The trail is well marked with rectangular metal blazes, and occasional round painted ones. Keep a careful eye out for them. The only slightly tricky part we encountered was at the beginning: when starting out from the Pine Cliffs Area, you are on the Neuse River beach; watch for the blaze on the left after about 1.5 miles that takes you up into the woods and south. We briefly missed it (wrong mileage in book) and had to slightly backtrack to it. Otherwise, the blazes and signs were clear. We used a map from an Allen DeHart MST book from about 2000; it was all we needed, although some distances there are off and the trail has since been slightly modified since then in one place, and so marked on the trail.

4. Go on a nice day during the cold season, say, November to March. By all accounts there are many ticks, mosquitoes, and deer flies in warm weather, and snakes can also be a concern then. We went on a sunny and not-too-cold day; I think it is more enjoyable in good weather.

5. Wear blaze orange during deer season; the hunters are out there.

6. The trail has about a mile of wooden elevated trail, which avoids a lot of swampy ground. There are some other watery areas; we had not had a lot of rain, so those areas were not too frequent or bad, but we did get our shoes wet a couple times.

7. The feel of the trail varies, from riverside sand, to forest canopy, to pine needles, to leaves, to dirt roads. It is very interesting and pretty in this respect. There is the occasional trash, and even an abandoned yacht along a dirt road (!), which is disappointing. Overall however it is a very worthwhile hike. Happy trails!

Cahooque Creek Boat Launch

Reviewed By SharonB2 - Havelock, North Carolina

My husband and I decided to check out the boat ramp and facilities at Cahooque Creek in the Croatan National Forest. The drive is about 5 miles off of Route 101 until you reach the water. About half of the drive is on asphalt pavement and the other half is on a fairly good dirt road. Pulling a boat out here could be tedious, but the end result is a nice parking area, boat ramp, and bathroom facilities.

Newport River Adventures

Reviewed By smac90 - Newport, North Carolina

This place is great for those that don't have a kayak, boat canoe etc. My husband and I rented two kayaks for a few hours and paddled down the scenic Newport River. I have lived in the area but have never done that. Newport River Adventures were great! He gave us an emergancy number, baggies to keep our phones, cameras dry and a box with a few emergency necessities. Very peaceful. There is a boat dock next to the place but on the day we went there wasn't anyone else on the river. We had a great time and look forward to doing it again.
