...it's also a casually manicured forest of near ancient cedar, cypress, red pine, hemlock fir and umbrella pine replete with much of what visitors associate with Japan and so much more; devotees conducting religious observances, monks in saffron, black and white, moss covered everything, lantern lined stone paths, statuary both whimsical and austere, torii, temples, gentle streams... and quietude (not a complete list). Each visit will end with your arrival at Toro-do, at dawn, you can take in morning prayers, and at dusk, enjoy the stillness under hanging lamps while facing Kobo Daishi's Mausoleum. There isn't really all that much to do here, just observe, absorb, process, reflect, and be.

Today was the first day of the 2017 Sanada Festival on the grounds of this facility. After opening ceremonies, they had a gun/rifle demonstration by townspeople dressed in the military uniforms of the Sanada warring era. I believe the guns/rifles are authentic 300+ years-old weapons. Quite impressive program. The “warriors” stayed around after the demonstration and provided photo ops for anyone wanting to pose with them. Lots of excitement and fun. Lots of food and other stalls scattered around the field. They had other activities such as a magician show, J-pop dancing by youngsters, karate demonstration by youngsters and more. The information center is nicely arranged with very interesting displays worth one’s time to review. It has a large parking area for cars but unfortunately, due to the festival, cars had to be parked at alternative parking areas. This facility is a fair walk from the train station. They only had one brochure in English which they had to locate in a cabinet. A very helpful and friendly staff helped me with figuring things out regarding the program of the day. The main parade through town is on May 5, every year starting from this facility. So get ready for next year’s Sanada festival and a visit to this facility for education and fun.

I attended the Sanada Festival and was in the area of the information center. This old temple is a short walk from the information center. In the old days women were not allowed on the sacred Mount Koya. So this was the closest to could come for a while. Ladies’ breast seem to be something they worship as one may purchase and leave wooden amulets adorned with breasts of all designs. One of the trails leading up to Mount Koya starts near here. The stairs leading up to the Niukanshofu Shrine is right next to Jison-in temple.

Wooden temples hidden among the trees, mist-covered Mountains, smooth-headed monks in colorful robes--all the Buddhist film archetypes are alive on Mt. Koya. A deeply sacred place, central to the Shingon sect of Buddhism, Mt. Koya is also a World Heritage Site due to its more than 1000-year-old teaching and meditation sites.
Koyasan is popular with pilgrims and tourists alike and can have the atmosphere of a carnival. Crowds on weekends and holidays can sell out lodging, so book ahead!
Don't try to do this in a at from Osaka-you need two days to make this worthwhile.
I hope the train track gets repaired soon-the long bus ride up the mountain is painful!

A nice arrangements of displays, mostly of information and illustrations on the wall with some artifacts from the past. No English brochure available but they had many of the wall displays with English explanation which made it very educational. Photos were allowed for most of the displays. Having seen the 2016 NHK Taiga Drama Sanada Maru, I especially enjoyed the visit and learned a lot.

The complex was interesting to walk around, very peaceful and quiet which we liked. The Great Stupa is huge and so bright. We enjoyed spending some time admiring all there was to see.
