Appi is a "bubble era" resort, which means it was purpose built for skiing and is not centred around a traditional village. A huge hotel complex sits at the base, with modern facilities. Lifts are a mixed bag of older style open chairs, covered chairs and gondolas. Lifts are long, as are the runs. The topography ( a volcano) means that the lower slopes are gentle ( very long run outs), and the upper slopes much steeper. Prospective skiers should study the trail map carefully - the lifts on the " second" area and "sailors" area all lead to runs that are black or red. Only the main gondola in the "centre" area offers a green run all the way from the top to the bottom. Beginners will therefore be spending much of their time on the lower half of the centre area of the resort, riding the chairlifts.
We were fortunate to get plenty of fresh snow and enjoyed great conditions. Like most Japanese resorts, it is very quiet during the week, and much busier on the weekend. We were a bit disappointed with the on mountain eating options, especially during the week, when nothing is open in the second and sailors areas.
We hired snow shoes and enjoyed the marked trail, which included a fun "butt sledding" experience.
We were also pleased with the number of runs left ungroomed, and runs with wide side lines left ungroomed.

Judging from the map location, this listing refers to the Promenade walk along the plateau located at the peak of Mt. Hachimantai. The car/bus ride to the starting point takes care of nearly all the hard work. From there, a short, modest climb pays ample dividends in the form of a beautiful, mostly-flat mid-autumn walk on a well-maintained pathway of boards. The trail around the ponds was quiet and tranquil. Note to self: do it again with snow shoes when the Aspite Line (Rt. 23) re-opens in mid-April! The wildflowers of early summer would be a wonderful sight as well. The area surely holds interest whatever the season. Assignment: compare and contrast this walk with the trails at the top of the Mt. Hakkoda ropeway in Aomori Pref.

Great snow, long runs (up to 5.5km) and hardly any other Aussies skiing here. Can get a little on the cold side when the wind picks up though!

Shimokura is a good place for skiiers and boarders who are more experienced. Beginners still can do many of the runs, but there is no training area here. This ski hill is connected to Panorama via a shuttle bus that runs every hour so it is easy to get back and forth between the two.

This is the forth oldest geothermal power plant in the world. Also this is proud of its excellent quality of steam with no impurities.
The steam is used for dyeing at Geothermal Dyeing Studio where you can try the dyeing.
There are three long-run onsen and Japanese hotels around it.

I love this place, located at the foot of Mt.Hachimantai. Good coffee brewed with Hachimantai's spring water called "Kanazawa Spring" by a siphon coffee-maker. But the coffee stand and restaurant close in winter, from November to March.

八幡平アスピーテラインの雪の回廊が長い冬を終え、開通しました。道路の両側の雪の壁が最大6m近くありました。展望台からの眺めはまさに雪国です。
