Sitting on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by Glacier Bay National Park, the only way to arrive in Gustavus, a small town with fewer than 500 permanent residents, is by boat or plane. Once there, you can stock up on supplies, plan a tour into the park, charter a whale watching boat or just appreciate the solitude and beauty of such an isolated place. Wander the quiet beaches, gathering wild strawberries for a picnic, or sit on the dock, watching the sun set over distant mountain peaks.

Glacier Bay Sea Kayaks is an NPS concession in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska. We offer both full and half day guided kayak tours or independent kayak rentals in Bartlett Cove, a very protected rain forest environment with opportunities to view a variety of land mammals, marine and bird life. Expedition rentals are also available for experienced kayakers and campers.
We rented kayaks from Glacier Bay Sea Kayaks and went out on our own. We had been sea kayaking before, but are still beginners. The lady who helped us get our equipment was very helpful and gave plenty of direction to make sure we had everything in order before we left. She also gave us good information on where to go and what to look for. This day was the highlight of our trip to Alaska. The amount of wildlife to be seen in the area is simply unbelievable! Just outside Bartlett Cove humpback whales were feeding. To watch these beautiful creatures in the distance from the water's surface was astounding.

To begin with...I do not delete, hide or edit ANY reviews on this page. That being said...our vessel is 50’ long with seating for 28 passengers and an open back deck with a rain awning for viewing and photography of the whales and wildlife. We depart from the Gustavus City dock which is approximately 9 miles from Glacier Bay Lodge and Glacier Bay. From there we generally take the 7.2 mile crossing in Icy Strait to an area by Chichigof Island known as Point Adolphus. The crossing takes about 35 minutes and quite often we will check out Sea Otters on the way over. Once we get to PA (Point Adolphus) we position ourselves near the whales and shut off the engines so we can drift with them and we place our Hydrophone in the water to hear their sounds over our speaker system. Although we always see whales (up close) we usually also see many Stellar Sea Lions, Bald Eagles and sometimes the occasional Alaska Brown Bear strolling the shores of Chichigof Island. During the course of the tour we offer information about the area, the whales, and the other wildlife we encounter. On the average we see Orca (Killer Whales) about a dozen times a season.
We have travelled Alaska extensively and have taken many small boat whale watching tours in several locations and have had many terrific captains. Cross Sound was a replacement for another tour's cancelled trip that we had no control over scheduling ourselves (lodging package). The boat, Taz, holds 22 people I believe but there we only 16 on this trip. First, on one whole side of the outer viewing deck there were 4 plastic lawn chairs that took up the entire side so 4 people out of 16 could view that side. Second, the boat is diesel and smelled so bad that multiple people were holding their noses and making faces and commenting to each other. Third, the Captain would take the boat to an area he wanted to go then stop and wait eventhough several spouts were seen in other directions. It was like his routine to go to 5 or 6 locations ignoring guests sightings of whales. For the WHOLE trip!! It got so bad that he pulled kelp out of the water and spent 15 minutes talking about it and also pulled out a fishing pole and caught a herring to show all. Not because there were no whale spouts in the distance. We would sit for approx 20 minutes in each spot the entire trip and saw a distant breach (other tour boat closer and at least in the general vicinity of spouts without chasing). We did later find out in Glacier Bay operators are not allowed to follow at Alaska State Law distances. This would have been nice to know ahead of time. He didn't even try to be in the vicinity and only saw one whale that accidentally came within a reasonable distance of our stopped boat. The worst though, was how the Captain misinformed a guest about whale behavior. Some passengers stated that he wanted to save gas since his boat wasn't full. This was the opinion of many who grumbled amongst all watching on deck that day. This review is a consensus of comments heard onboard that day. A passenger had to ask the 4 passengers to stack the lawn chairs so all could see on both sides. Capt or crew's job??? The Captain may respond to this bad review but there is NO justification to taking hundreds and hundreds of hard earned dollars from trusting guests, especially those who are educated in how a tour should be run. We are senior contributors and have never written a review like this, so be aware that if you just want a ride on the water and see whales from very far away then this is your trip.

We stayed at the Gustavus Inn and they had bikes for us to use. We took this ride with kids- very easy ride and fun to enjoy the outdoors from our Inn.

My trip with Spirit Walker Expeditions was amazing. The guides were knowledgeable, considerate and accommodating of everyone's expectations in the group, and incredible cooks. I provide half and full day tours of Glacier Bay and Gustavus. I build each tour around whatever the visitors wishes. We can go on a bird walk, tour the temperate rain forest, or walk the beach. If you are interested in photography, I'm happy to offer up a photo lesson. Or, if you prefer, I can photograph your group with Glacier Bay as the backdrop. For the ultimate adventure, we can charter our own boat to go up Glacier Bay in search of bears, ice, whales and wilderness!
Sean collected me from my accommodation and we walked around Lester Island. Sean selected this as being a great place for me to get the experience I was after.
After extensive experience as a Ranger in a number of national parks, Sean's knowledge of the flora and fauna is really impressive.
We walked around Lester Island. 9 miles. Amazing.
We saw:
Coyote (very very special)
Peregrine falcon
Bald eagle
Seals
Otter
Ducks
Exquisite flora
We saw tracks, squats, hair of:
Bears
Wolves
Moose
The weather was incredible. Two short showers but great walking conditions blessed by a rainbow.
Sean's a professional photographer so he also delivered a USB with photos from our walk. I thoroughly recommend Sean as a guide.

It was a really great course. The owner is a really great guy, and has lived in Gustavus for 40 years, I would definitely recommend. Plus he has rugged cabins for cheaper weekly rentals if you need a place to crash and store gear while backpacking or other excursions

Me and My family went fishing in Gustavus Alaska for 5 days. This was the best vacation ever. The scenery was Amazing! The water was not ruff to fish in, It was calm most of the days (unless you go out to the open ocean). We were almost always catching Halibut and got to keep our limit every day (35-44 in. fish). We caught fish that were huge (two 71 inches 188 lbs.) and had a blast. If love fishing this is a thing you have got to do. If you go bring cameras, rain gear, Jacket, and a hat. Our captain Greg (also owner) was awesome he knows all the places where the halibut are and the best places to fish. If you go you will be amazed and will not regret going.
