Golmud (Chinese: 格尔木; pinyin: Gé'ěrmù; Tibetan: ན་གོར་མོ།, Wylie: Na-gor-mo), also transliterated as Ge'ermu, Geermu or Nagormo, is a county-level city in Qinghai Province, China, bordering Xinjiang to the northwest and the Tibet Autonomous Region to the southwest. Administrated by Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, it is the third largest city in Qinghai and the third largest in the Tibetan Plateau (after Xining and Lhasa). The population is now about 205,700. The name of the city derives from Mongolian, and its literal meaning in the local Western Mongolian is "Rivers".

We had been in a dust storm the day before in Golmud and there was very much dust left in the atmosphere so you could only see a couple of hundred meters so we missed it on the way up, but on the way down in the morning what a sight to see all the animals and the morning sun gleaming on the ice capped mountains a sight I will never forget.

The journey here was a treacherous one whereby there was more than a stretch of three kilometers of potholes. There doesn’t seem to be any ticketing booth and the road signs were also unclear. Things got better the moment you’re inside. There are six stations whereby you can get to see different natural landscapes. Somehow the emerald colored water set against the salt base of the lake makes it very picturesque. Throw in the snow capped mountains in the background and you have a perfect photo op! The best part of it is free admission; maybe I picked the right day to visit.
