Geraldine Observatory is one of New Zealands best private observatories. Operated by Peter and Wyn Aldous, the observatory has a 14 inch, six inch refractor, four inch triplit refractor, all mounted on a Paramont ME mount in a large roll on roll off observatory, a 11 inch HD Edge telescope in a domed observatory as well as others. Peters main interest is super nova hunting (exploding stars)and sharing the joys of the night sky with members of the public. Peter has over 40 years experience as a amateur astronomer.Donations go to promoting outreach astronomy in South Canterbury.
We had a great evening with Peter. He is such an enthusiast and so knowledgeable about the heavens. We loved seeing the planets and nebula so close - a wonderful insight into the night sky that we tend to ignore or take for granted. We went as a family and would thoroughly recommend an evening with Peter who is friendly, personable and a natural educator sharing his passion for astronomy. Thanks a million Peter. God Bless!

The Geraldine Historical Museum is based around the historical town Board office building. We record and display the history of the Geraldine area, with an emphasis on personalising the area’s history through life-sized photographs and feature boards highlighting the deeds of pioneers and those who made history in the area. We also undertake family research and record oral histories.

Took a large group of kids through here. It’s amazing, so much to see allow plenty of time as it’s well worth it. Great variety

I really enjoyed exploring the tracks and trails of Peel Forest! A good break after the covid nightmare of being indoors all the time. Lots of walks, both long and short, can be accessed from both car parks. The 'main' carpark by the big tree walk could deifnitely do with more signage though - a map of the tracks in the parkw ould be extremely useful here! The other car park is much smaller and seems to be mainly used for those doing the Little Mount Peel walk, which I would highly recommend for those of you who are a bit fitter. There is a map at this smaller carpark, and the walk is well-signposted from there. This walk takes about 5-6 hours, so it's a full day, and goes quite steeply uphill, whichever track you choose. I would recommend good hiking boots for this walk, as it's not on a flat path, many rocks and roots are in the way, so watch your footing. If you're feeling up for a challenge, go up the south ridge line and down the main track, forming and anti-clockwise loop. I wouldn't recommend going the other way around, as the south ridge walk is very steep and rocky, much easier to come up than down.

Various pathways through the native trees with many birds so very close to the township. It's a workout ie not flat - has views over the town.

Don't believe the reports that the giant jersey is no more. It is proudly on display at the tourist information in the Kiwi Country store (next door to the Z petrol station). I live taking friends along to see it promising a life changing event. And 95% of the time they take a photograph of themselves stood under it. It's just a pity that it's not more prominently displayed as whenever I'm showing friends it, a coach party of tourists will past it and not give it a second glance.
