The museum covers the maritime history of the Connecticut River Valley.
This is one of our local museums and probably our favorite. This week we booked to see the model train exhibit on the third floor. This holiday exhibit running to Feb 14th features a giant model train with running trains and exquisite detail. The trains move around a landscape of miniature factories, junkyards ,a train turntable and a working harbor. There's a camera mounted on one locomotive so you can see(on a mounted screen) the display all from the perspective of the tiny engine. Not just for kids this exhibit provides history and exciting visual detail. Also humor, if you look hard enough you can find Santa undressing for a swim. On the way out there's an extra bonus as one passes through a photographic exploration of the Ct. River Valley. For history buffs the museum has a floor devoted to commerce and seafaring along this same River. The staff are always patient and welcoming. Appointments are needed to visit which we like because it cuts down on crowds. One can really enjoy the exhibits.

Take one or both tours in combination for a delightful sightseeing excursion through some of the most scenic areas of Connecticut: scenic train ride in restored railroad cars pulled by a coal-fired locomotive and a ride up the Connecticut River by riverboat.

The Spa of Essex, an elite and elegant day spa, sits on three secluded acres just a short walk from the Essex Village. The Spa of Essex offers more than simply treatments, they promise an experience! Escape, relax and renew.
As you drive up to the large home that houses the Spa you feel a sense of calm. There is ample space around it and plenty of parking. You will be greeted by a friendly receptionist in the foyer. They are taking necessary precautions during Covid and I feel they are making every effort to keep their staff and clientele safe. All the linens are changed after every massage and the therapist changes their shirt. There is a filter running in the room. Masks stay on unless you want to take it off when you are face down. Face up, it must be on. I had a therapeutic massage with Chris. This was my first massage in a year and he worked hard to relieve the stress in my back and neck. He released trigger points and I now have further range if motion. His communication skills are excellent so it was a pleasure having him work on me. Since I am not from the neighborhood I cannot say if the $110 they charge for the hour is a typical price. I can only say it was worth it to me and I will return when we come back to this area. Tip: if you are not going for a massage because you are concerned about being in a closed room, book the couples room, it has a window. If I had known, I would have booked it.

The sample of the truffle was delicious; the warm cookies were scrumptious which included the same chocolate, a taste of butter and sea salt. A perfect dessert on a chilly November day.
