At about 2 hours from Kochi - it's easy to decide to give this place a miss due to the distance ( about 60kms ). However, it's an effort well spent if you decide to. The new dam is built across the Periyar river and causing a huge scenic backwater. Boating is offered on the backwater - pedal boats as well as steamboats - a truly rewarding experience in the lap of mother nature. Note that the boating is seasonal, check before you go, if you are particular about boating. Other than this, there is the old dam, which is believed to have been built by devils by laying huge boulders on the river bed in a bid to inundate the Trikkariyur temple and Lord Shiva outsmarted the devils. The huge boulders can be seen today an done has to walk through the woods for about 0.75 kms - it's a great walk ( can be done with small kids ). There is also a cave enroute to the old dam where you can spend a few minutes. There is a good KTDC restaurant close by. Other places that are at a short distance from here include the Idamalayar dam, the Thattekad bird sanctuary and the Trikkariyur temple.
