Historic Edenton State Historic Site offers a wide range of tours of the historic district of Edenton, N.C. Our site includes: the Historic Edenton Visitor Center complete with exhibits, orientation film, information, and restrooms; the 1800/1827 James Iredell House, the home of one of the justices of the first U.S. Supreme Court; the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse, the most intact and longest running Colonial American Courthouses; and the 1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse, one of the few remaining screw-pile lighthouses in the United States. We also provide tours of the 1758 Cupola House, the 1736 St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and walking tours on the life of Harriet Jacobs, who was born into slavery in Edenton, but escaped on the Maritime Underground Railroad and became an authour and abolitionist. Site Staff lead the tours on the Edenton Trolley that departs from the waterfront as well.
My wife is recovering from knee replacement surgery and want to get away from home for a few days, and I suggested Edenton, a historic little town in Northeastern North Carolina, We went to the Visitors Center and the Welcome Center and saw a good video on the town's history. She decided she was not able to do the two-hour walking tour to visit all of the historic buildings, but we took the hour-long trolley tour. The guide was fantastic and knew this history of all of the old buildings in town. I would recommend either tour for tourists.

I was in Edenton for the day, and I am Very Glad that I went to this historic home. A lot of interesting history here. I came home to find out my 14yo daughter had actually heard of Penelope Barker and her political involvement. I wish I had brought her with me.

Taken by itself, the lighthouse probably warrants 30 minutes or so of interest in a town with many sights worth seeing. However, catch it at dawn or during a really good sunset, and it makes for beautiful photography.

Walking into this building reminded me of experiencing the preserved history of Williamsburg, VA. The cemetery outside has very old stone markers. Be sure to grab a walking tour brochure from the visitor center to help you understand the significance of this congregation in Edenton's history.

Queen Anne Park is a lovely park. There is a playground for the kids, restrooms, benches, lots of trees that provide shade. You can take a walk on the waterfront or just sit and enjoy the views.

Beautiful Cupola house is rich in American history! The house is open for tours. You have to go to the visitor center on Broad street to get your tickets first.

We loved seeing all the old Revolutionary War cannons. They provided a very good photo shoot and took you back to our country's beginning.

If you have a smidgen of interest in NC history, you have to see the 1767 Courthouse in Edenton. Its just the anchor for all the history and changes that have happened in Chowan County. Keep in mind that the early colonists also held court in an earlier building for over 50 years before this place was even built! This courthouse is just very symbolic for how North Carolina was developed as immigrants from Virginia and from abroad came to America and the fledging North Carolina colony. This is a treasure that Edenton has saved to share with us all. Don't miss it if you travel to Historic Edenton.

I accidentally stumbled into the Chowan Arts Council and was very impressed. I was expecting something small but there is a large gallery with many forms of art from painting to pottery to jewelry to scarves and much more.
The quality of the work was outstanding and it was nice to find it being showcased here. Make sure to visit if in the area.

The Edenton Cotton Mill Museum of History is a small museum but packed with history and information. The museum is in what used to be the mill office of the Cotton Mill as the actual Cotton Mill is now condos.
The museum has managed to save the mill's history with documents, photos and artifacts. But you get to learn about the people who worked at the mill too.
If you are looking to learn more about Edenton's past, make sure to check out this lovely museum.
