OT Dam

Reviewed By 818leem - Dromana, Australia

Hidden in the Arthers seat State park is a little dam named OT Dam. It can be accessed from a forest track that runs between Arthur’s Seat road in Red Hill and Boundary Road in Dromana. The best way is to put a car at the Boundary Road shops and then drive up to a large painted water tank on Arthur’s Seat Road then the walk is down hill most of the way. There is a signed turn off to the dam and a nice initial view, and then you can proceed to walk, to the left, around it and across the old dam wall, wondering as to how they managed to get all the earth works into the middle of the forest. After you cross the dam wall there is a path up and slightly right that will bring you back to the main track where you can follow the signs to Boundary road for a well earned coffee or snack. There are some interesting things about this dam. Firstly it, along with Devil Bend reservoir, has marron as well as yabbies. Marron is native to Western Australia and is a declared vermin in Victoria. How they got into the dam is not known, but with a net and bait and patience you could catch one. But here’s the catch 22. They are vermin so it is not illegal to catch them but there is a $2000 fine for having a live marron in your possession! So between the surface of the water until you manage to cook them ( or kill them humanely) you could be caught and fined. They make excellent eating. So do yabbies. See the picture. The big one is a marron. Now the other interesting thing about the dam is why is it there and why is it called OT dam. Early last century the Cottees/KioOra company wanted to set up a passion fruit vineyard on the slopes of the hill adjoining Boundary Road and they needed a supply of water to feed this. As passion fruit took some time to establish, they meanwhile grew chilies from which they produced a popular, at the time, cordial which they called OT cordial. So when the dam was built is was named OT dam. Those who have been keeping up will now know why the dam was called OT but they should still wonder why the cordial was called OT . Well it was called OT because it was ‘ot.

I arranged this for my husbands 30th as a surprise and he absolutely loved it! They staff were super friendly and knowledgeable and he had such a good time. Easy location to find, the route that you get taken on is beautiful and it is right next to a distillery so can have a lovely lunch/drink afterwards! Price was quiet good value (I had done my research and this was the best price/deal) Will definitely be something that I would do again for gifts of any big milestones for family/friends! So worth it.

Whether you are going to Stillwater the restaurant for lunch or an event, or to stay in one of the delightful Lakeside cottages for a break or just for a tasting Crittendens is well worth a stop & being in Dromana it is easier to get to than some of the other wineries that are tucked away down windy roads Walk around the lake, enjoy the view, do your tasting & take home some of thier loveley wines some of which are unusual being Italian or Spaish influenced. Enjoy!!
