Hayward Field

Reviewed By Philip G - Livingston, Texas

As a former long distance runner, I made sure to visit Hayward Field on our trip to Eugene. Although the locked gates kept us from entering the venue, we were able to get a good view of the track and stadium. On the outside, there were signs explaining the history of Hayward Field and honoring two legendary Oregon track coaches as well as Steve Prefontaine.

Row River Trail

Reviewed By rvbikelady

I rode this on a Friday afternoon in July. The path is well marked, and paved well. It is about 16 miles long from the Trailhead Park in Cottage Grove. Simply outstanding. There are some bumps in the trail where tree roots have pushed the asphalt up, but they are all marked very well so that you know they are coming up! Wow! There are other parks along the way, and bathrooms if you need them. I'll be riding it again tomorrow! Thanks to the cities/counties who maintain this trail. A true gem.

The Offical Simpsons Mural

Welcome to Springfield, Oregon, home of the official Simpsons mural! Unveiled on August 25, 2014, this is the first mural created through a partnership between The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and any city. It will always be the first – so don’t even go there other Springfields! This mural is the product of several years of work between City officials and Matt’s staff at 20th Century Fox brainstorming a number of ideas to best celebrate Matt Groening’s Oregon roots and his connection to Springfield, Oregon. In the end, the City thought public art would be the perfect venue and Matt agreed. We hope you enjoy the mural and your visit to downtown Springfield, Oregon.

I made a few "Simpsons" pit stops in Springfield and Eugene (or is it Shelbyville?), and this mural was one of them. The mural is impressively large, and well done.

If you're a fan of the show, check it out along with some other local Simpsons-related sites, and it makes for a fun day. You can find the locations through a Google search, which includes unofficial self-run tours. That is how I found Max's pub/tavern in Eugene, which is (in part) the basis of Moe's Tavern.....right down to the pickled eggs.

You can also eat a pink-frosted "Homer" doughnut from VooDoo Doughnuts in Eugene.

And guess what street names you can find in downtown Portland?.....Quimby St.; Kearney St., Lovejoy St., Flanders St., Burns(ide) St. and Montgomery Park, and Evergreen Terrace.

Autzen Stadium

Reviewed By Al154 - Phoenix, Arizona

Was in Eugene for a meeting and went to Autzen for the game. It was built in 1967 but has all the modern items a stadium needs. There are big screens above both endzones so you can replays of the action if you miss it on the field. The Duck fans are LOUD and the students are big supporters of their team with the Duck mascot doing push ups for every point scored by the home team, which can be a lot. The uniforms are always colorful to say the least and the play on the field is fast with few breaks except for the TV timeouts. Before the kickoff there are lots of tailgate parties, most by local fans, but some are sponsored as well. Since the Ducks won it was a great way to spend a Saturday at the stadium.

Dorris Ranch

Explore Oregon's oldest working filbert farm! Dorris Ranch's 258 encompass 11 hazelnut orchards (local folks call them filberts), native oak savannah, riverside habitats and secluded trails. This is the western terminus of the four-mile paved Middle Fork Path.

A little gem close to Eugene/Springfield. I went there for a quick hike, but it also has historical buildings, a working farm, and they run a number of programs throughout the year.

The main trail is essentially a straight shot about a mile in distance from the parking lot down to the river. There are also several loop trails, so depending on the combination taken one could get in multiple miles of hiking. The trails themselves are flat and wide, with compacted gravel, so they're especially good for people who may not be as quick or sure footed.

The area did not seem crowded, even for the first pleasant Saturday in spring. I passed a few people here and there along the way, but also had many long stretches of solitude.

The trails pass through bits of forest and old orchards. It was sad to see so many of the nut trees are impacted by a blight, but the staff seem to be doing all they can do to save the orchards.

All in all, a perfect area if you want to take a quick stroll and be out in nature without having to drive out to the wilderness.

Saginaw Vineyard

I became a wine-club member in 2012. Scott and Cheryl are making terrific wines for the price. Very appropriately priced. Karen usually is "on" at the tasting bar in the RED BARN. Free tastings always lead me to buy a few more bottles. Their PINOT NOIR is about the best value in Oregon. Give a bottle to a wine snob and you'll be surprised at the results.

The place is really fun on Friday Night. In the BARN during rainy times and outside in sunny times, the place rocks with free live music and great food. Club members get 30% off ONLY at these events. Just another reason to go!

HAVE FUN AT SAGINAW VINEYARD!
