You will also encounter Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, Harbour Seals, Dalls and Harbour Porpoise.A small, owner-operated family business, Ocean EcoVentures is committed to providing you with an intimate and informative whale watching tour.
I took two of our grand daughters out yesterday for a very special occassion to hopefully see a whale. Coming from Calgary they were excited, but after nearly an hour of motoring they were ready to return. They were expecting whales from the moment we left the dock, not that we had to go and find them!
Well did Simon ever deliver. When he slowed down because of the report of a minke nearby the girls suddenly looked up just in time to see it surface.
Five minutes later two Orcas were seen off the starboard bow and for the next 45 minutes we followed as they dove and surfaced, occassionly thrashing some kill which we fortunately couldn't see.
The stellar sea lions were a nice desert to the day.
When we returned home the girls were buzzing with excitement to call their parents and little sister with OMG you won't believe what we saw today.
Definitely worth the run out.
I highly reccommend this adventure for everyone.

Really enjoyed our time here for a tasting and tour. We actually received 9 tastings instead of the expected 7. One was a double, the other was an offered extra of an expensive vintage. The explanations of the wines and answers to our questions were wonderful. One would think at the end of a likely busy summer they'd be tired of giving the "speech" but it seemed fresh and happily given as if it was the first time.
Beautiful grounds to walk around, peaceful time to relax and let the tasting settle in. Wonderful visit!

Merridale is a delicious destination in Cowichan —an apple orchard, craft cider house, small batch distillery, and wedding/event venue. Join us for a cider and spirits tasting; savour farm to table cuisine in our eatery; fresh baked goods made from cider leaven in our bakery; discover our traditional cider and spirits methods on our tours; stroll the orchard while your kids search for the mystical faeries rumoured to live here; shop in our farm store for unique artisan wares; relax in our lounge with cocktails, cider and spirit flights, and appetizers for pairing; overnight in a yurt or book a wedding/event. Open daily. Visit our website for hours and special events, like Sunday pizza nights and Christmas at the farm!
So we love cider (make it ourself) as well as visiting places cider farms in England.
This place was quite charming, a little more commercialised than most of the UK places, but very nice.
As you enter (toilets on the left) you get to the bar, where you can do the tasting - then to the right is a little place selling a range of foods.
Then off to the left is a restaurant..... a nice time to spend a couple of hours

Visit this 'big' museum in the small village of Shawnigan Lake - it's guaranteed to surprise you. For over thirty years, the museum has celebrated the history and the people of Shawnigan Lake (and surrounding area). Drop in for extensive information on the spectacular Kinsol Trestle; renowned Canadian artist EJ Hughes; the true Canadian Last Spike and many other significant history-bites.
This tiny museum is absolutely packed cheek-to-jowl with artifacts without seeming cluttered. The locally significant displays start right inside the door an continue in a small circular tour with a couple of minute rooms offside that feature special exhibits. The specific treasures I noted are a Beryl Cryer original book (Cryer lived for a time in Shawnigan Lake) and pencil studies by famed painter E.J. Hughes. Hughes in fact, has his own feature room, as Hughes lived in Shawnigan Lake. There is also one Hughes original and several high quality repros as well as a video made by the museum curator. The museum also features a special exhibit and video theatre on the Kinsol Trestle, another local treasure! This gem is a "do not miss" if you are visiting to see the trestle.

We came here several years ago with visitors from Switzerland and enjoyed a memorable lunch on the patio. This time we were one day early for the bistro but we did take time to sample some wines and enjoy talking to the owner. The knock outs for us were the two superb dessert wines we bought home, a fine blackberry port to finish off a future special meal.

I head to the Saturday's Farmer's Market about once a months for the past 5+ years. There is some amazing vendors. So many different things to choice from. Potted flowers and plants, home made soaps, a lot of organic fruits and veggies. Home made everything. Its nice to support local at a reasonable price. Lots of food on the go stands. There is even stands for organic pet food. There is live music. There is even body products and bath bombs. Lots of vendors are cash only but more and more have credit/debit machines now that there is more on the go options for card payment. Great place to find unique holiday gifts. I bought an amazing glass blown martini glasses, pitcher and shot glass.

The staff was excellent, the course was average. The pro shop did not have a yardage book, many of the holes have blind shots, tricked up dog legs, etc. The carts do not have a GPS system. If you are not familiar with the course, you are not going to have a good round. The front nine is mundane, not challenging, none of the holes are suitable for a driver. The back nine is a bit more challenging. The bunkers do not contain sand, but a strange dirt. The dirt is inconsistent in playability. Most of the greens were in good shape and rolled true. Originally we were to be a twosome, but the staff requested we move up one time to be paired with another twosome, a father and his novice golfer daughter. On the first tee, they announced their intentions to play a modified scramble to facilitate pace of play. We embraced the pairing, anticipating our time would be left as an open "starter time". WRONG!!! Even though, Scott the starter was told of our visiting from out of country and the newness of the of the other pair, he allowed "members" to tee off in what should have been a starter's time. The foursome of members began pushing us hard on the second hole, even though we were ahead of pace of play. We were on top of the foursome in front of us. This continued the remainder of the front nine. On the 8th hole, I made a comment to a player ambassador about their rudeness. His only comment was, we do have members who like to play lightening fast, you are ahead pace of play; enjoy your day. I think he should have told the group to back off. We waited on the 17th tee as the three foursomes in front of us had a bad day on the short par 3. We still finished the round in 4 hours and 5 minutes, even with the long wait on 17. I do not comprehend why the foursome behind us was so rude and disrespectful to us and the game of golf. Based upon the actions of the foursome behind us, I cannot suggest any visitor play this course.

For a nominal sum [recommended $5] you are able to stroll back in time to the wooden boat era. Some are being restored on premises. There is also an interesting display of old outboard motors. The museum is incorporated onto the wharf so it's a nice, leisurely walk along the pier with lovely scenery. What's not to like?

I wanted to go kayaking. I was staying in Cowichan Bay and the outfit there wasn't available. Am I EVER glad! The hotel suggested Blue Dog Kayaking in Mill Bay. It was fantastic! I went to rent a kayak for a couple of hours. The owner Dave was just starting his teaching of a basic kayaking course. I stood aside and listened for a few minutes. I was SO impressed with what he was saying/teaching that I decided to take the course! Need I say more?? Ok I will. Dave is funny, patient, clear in his explanations, patient, focussed, patient. Did I say patient?? We were 3 students and we had fun. While we were learning a new technique, I flipped my kayak. He was right there and proceeded to demonstrate a rescue with me. We all had an amazing day! I am DEFINITELY going back to Blue Dog Kayaking on my next trip! For anyone interested in kayaking or learning how to kayak, Dave's the man and Blue Dog Kayaking is the place! Thank you Dave for such a great day!
