On the outskirts of Duluth and one quick turn off Highway 210, this state park offers a wonderful place to spend a day outdoors. The swinging bridge is a must – part of an excellent walking path, it comes with its own boatload of history, the current bridge being the fifth one built on that spot. (A sign at the north end of the bridge explains the bridge’s history, a great example of engineering and tenaciousness.) The bridge crosses the beautiful St. Louis River, lined on both sides with boulders, making it both picturesque and a great spot for hours of scrambling over the rocks. Right at the south end of the bridge, an easy climb down a gravel path can bring you right to the water’s edge, just the start of the scrambling possibilities.
For those wanting more purely horizontal walk, the walking paths on both sides offer nice views of the river, along with benches every so often for the occasional rest. Especially in fall, the colors alone make the walk very worth it. With picnic and camping facilities, the park has great opportunities for extended visits, though we weren’t able to stay longer than a couple of hours in this initial stop.

I had no idea what to expect from this place because it's still a working gas station, but it really feels authentically FLW. It could use a little TLC, but it's all original in the observation deck and FLW signage. I wish they'd plant some flowers in the observation deck, but other than that it's just as it should be. My husband thought the highlight was the FLW designed directional marker in the parking lot.

The family that runs this gets truck loads of rocks dumped in their front yard! They sell a good size bag for $10 and let you dig threw all the piles of rocks! We found lots of quarts and some agate's!

This is a casual, relaxing bar with excellent food and drinks. The BBQ Blue chicken wings are really tasty. They grind their own meat for the burgers and they are juicy. I ordered mine medium rate for max flavor. My husband had the Mediterranean flat bread with gyro meat which he gives a thumbs up. They have a good beer and drink menu and excellent service. I would drive out of my way to visit this place.

If you are just passing through town on your way "up north" consider a quick dip at "The Beach" in Cloquet. It is a sand-bottom, chlorinated, pool. It feels like a lake without the weedy bottom or fish you might experience in a real lake. Lifeguards are always on duty. Clean restrooms, showers, places to eat with a snack bar, and lots of activity to stretch your legs. We have spent whole days there, or just an hour or two. Its worth the visit.

Resort casino features "Blackjack Alley" with 18 tables, 1,250 video slot machines, 150 video poker machines and high-stakes bingo.
Spent a weekend at the hotel attached to the Black Bear Casino. I thought the rooms were nice, clean, but had nothing extra. We had a great view of the forest and saw the sunset each night. There is a lingering smoke scent throughout despite it being a non-smoking floor. There was not a refrigerator in our room which was disappointing. We only ate one meal at the restaurant---a breakfast buffet. It was very good. Great choices and omelet station along with many breakfast sweets. Loved the fresh fruit options. Very reasonable price. Pool area looked clean and was often full. The service throughout our stay was fantastic. I would certainly not hesitate to stay here again. The rates were much cheaper than many of the places near Duluth.

Make sure you stop for this train in Cloquet Minnesota. Visit the Frank Lloyd Wright gas station across the highway, grab a picnic and come play on the train. The City is "tolerant" of those who want a photo op on the train, although as kids we would be chased off for climbing though on it. According to the City of Cloquet's website:
"Resting in Fauley Park, alongside Highway 33 and Cloquet Avenue, is Duluth & Northeastern Railroad Steam Locomotive Number 16. This train is a reminder of the heroic train evacuations performed by Cloquet Union Depot Agent Lawrence Fauley who ordered trains from nearby train centers into town for the evacuation of our residents. This memorial serves to remind people of the 8,000 people ferried to safety as a result of his efforts."
"THE FIRE (of 1918)" was a marker for our history up here and the train was an important part of it all.
