Loved the buildings and architecture of this town. Saw goats being herded down a lane while next to the river fishermen were trying their luck. Easy detour when visiting Salamander.

We loved Ciudad Rodrigo - the Casco Historico was unspoilt and lovely. We spent two very enjoyable days there and may return later in the year. There are many fabulous buildings to see and many of these, including the Cathedral, can be seen from the magnificent 2.2km walk round the Casco Historic on the surprisingly broad city walls. The magnificent old part of Ciudad Rodrigo is contained inside the 2.2 kms of thick walls and spectacular fortifications, with narrow passages into the inner town. Walking round the walls yields great views both into the inner town and the countryside.

We visited Ciudad Rodrigo during our road trip and stopped a couple of hours during the journey from Porto to Salamanca. Very nice town with historical places like the original medieval walls and an astonishing Cathedral. Plaza Mayor with its palace is very beautiful. Nice places to eat and enjoy. Relaxing place.

We attended Mass in the Cathedral. The two clergymen taking the Mass were quite elderly, but their enthusiasm and their obvious love of the celebration were awe-inspiring. The celebrant spoke such beautiful and pure Castilian that I had no difficulty in understanding the sermon. BUT ... at the end of the service we were hustled out very quickly so that the (paid) tours could get under way. I am afraid that I found this rather un-Christian - sorry.

This castle anchored one corner of the city wall fortifications and is now a Parador hotel - although you’re free to wander around. You can walk the complete city wall circuit except for the small area which is occupied by this building. It certainly looks impressive from the outside and has been sympathetically restored inside. Would think it’s a nice place to stay and there’s plenty of parking.

The Ayuntiamento in CR is one of many very attractive buildings in the old town. One would not come to CR especially to see it but from the pictures it can clearly be seen to be very handsome. It is very nice to sit in the bar opposite with a 6.50 Euro bottle of wine and admire it.

The museum is located on the first floor in a building alongside the square next to Cathedral and I recommend you check opening times before visiting - we visited on a Sunday and it was open 11-2 with entrance 2euros per adult. To be honest I didn’t know what to expect - certainly not the sheer number and variety of chamberpots (it’s not a urinal museum as you might interpret in the strict sense). It’s hard to believe someone would actually collect and catalogue chamberpots as an interest. Most seem to originate from the UK - unfortunately all information and descriptions are in spanish, except for the one poster which has interesting detail regarding toilet arrangements back in Roman times on a section of Hadrian’s Wall! The owner/curator? wanted to explain items but it was all too technical for my miserable level of Spanish :-(
This is one of those museums you have to visit just to say you’ve been there!

This is an attractive building (16th century) with a nice central courtyard, but what we liked best is that it taught us about what happened to Cuidad Rodrigo during the Peninsula War when the French tried to take over Spain. At the beginning, there is a kiosk with explanations and little interactive drawings in multiple languages (English included) which shows you how the battles went. It's a great accompaniment to walking around the fortifications.

Walking along from Cathedral towards Plaza Mayor this square is on the left and you can’t miss it as there’s an ornate Fountain in the centre. However, on closer inspection the pool is full of stagnant water and rubbish (we visited late February 2018) - you have to wonder why if the fountain’s non operational the council wouldn’t just empty the water and leave it dry? The square is surrounded by church on one side and two sides of shops under the arches with flats above.
