The main draw of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is the Mound City Group, a collection of large reconstructed mounds commemorating the Hopewell tribe.
These sacred grounds belong to all North American Indian nation's. It was sacred ground where burial rites were performed
Forms of cremation and burial were performed as far back as 2000 years ago, according to archeological studies on the Camp Sherman site, now known as Mound City. The archeological studies were conducted right after World War 1 dismantling of Camp Sherman. This site was a national monument and is now a National Historical Park. Hopewell Culture NHP has five or six sites near Chillicothe Ohio.

We got a private tour of the house since we were the only ones there on a sunny fall day. It was very interesting with its many original furnishings and possessions, and Worthington's office with his personal items, but the bonus was the formal gardens and grounds with outbuildings and pond. You could just imagine the Worthington kids working their garden plots, and see the onsite furniture craftsman making the beautiful furniture for the house. One overlook was the view for the Great Seal of Ohio. It was amazing to hear all the business ventures Worthington established, such an entrepreneur. The museum is also a must see. We went to Carl's Diner afterward for lunch and stopped to walk around at the Indian mounds before heading home.

The park is a well kept relaxing and beautiful place, from the play ground for the kids, or the ball fields for the kids for there sports or the relaxing lake for fishing too, with the wild life of swans and geese and plenty of fish in the water too.

Take a quiet trail into the thickness of oaks and hickories. The Scioto Trail State Park in the Appalachian foothills makes for a pleasant hike.
Almost nobody there in Nov. 2016 on Tues-Wed that I was there. Beautiful leaves falling. Trails here are very wide, so you probably don't need long pants. Adjacent state forest has long trails. Even in the park have very steep sections. Toilets are pit type, but in nice enclosures that keep flies out. No showers available. No trash receptacles in the camp area. Lake has beach. Camp area has playground. Trailer spaces are close together except in the church loop, and have no vegetation between each other. Nice experience overall. A typical Ohio state park.

Instead of hiking this park, we rode the trails . Sugar loaf is a challenge for we less than fit. The younger family members enjoyed the short up and down trail. Good jog into woodsy nature

The 13 acres of this Hopewell site contain 23 ceremonial mounds.
23 plus earthen mounds over previous cremated charnel houses of the ancient Native American cultures indigenous to Southern Ohio.Enjoyed the knowledge of the Rangers. Also visit Trip Earthworks on US T 50 while in the area.

The Ross County Historical Society operates a three-house museum complex and a research library with thousands of historic books and documents. We also have a large photo archive. We are open April through December, Tuesday through Saturday 1-5. Winter hours by appointment only.
A friend and I were visiting a mutual friend in Chillicothe. The Historical Society was closed on the day were were there but he knew the manager and was able to get us in for 10 minutes to take a look at a beautiful old automobile. . . . the Logan. I had never heard of it but it was one of many brands in the early 1900"s and was manufactured in Chillicothe and later in Toledo. They even made delivery trucks for newspapers in Philadelphia. Next time I am in Chillicothe, I want to see all of the exhibits at the Historical Society.
