Aloha State Park

We try to make a basin site reservation because we spend a lot of time in our boat. The campsites are grassy and large and the park is kept very clean. My only negative is the showers need updating as there are a lot of campers and few outdated showers that water constantly leaks to the floor where you have to get dressed. There are a lot of activities for kids with a nice playground basketball and volleyball courts and horseshoe pits as well. The campground host also has games and items families can check out and use for the day. Childrens programs are also offered. This park makes a excellent family getaway

Cheboygan State Park

This may be the only state park campground where I checked in on a Saturday, so naturally it was completely booked and therefore more crowded than I prefer. The campsites also seemed to be on the small side, and offered no privacy. The beach, too, was disappointing; it's not on Lake Huron proper, but on Duncan Bay, which is so shallow as it approaches shore it almost reminded me more of a wetlands than a bay off of Lake Huron. It must be a very protected bay, too, as there was no wave action at all when I was there. Not what I've come to expect from the Lake Huron coastline.

Sea Shell City

Reviewed By Nila F - Beaverton, Michigan

For 25 years or more, our family has been joking about stopping at Sea Shell City. Quite frankly, it had become part of the routine while driving to the UP in Michigan or home again. Poor shop was the brunt of many jokes..."come see the man-eating clam" or "shop our world famous gift selection". Finally, today, my husband turned off the interstate into Sea Shell City. We both snickered as we entered. WHOA!!! Our preconceived ideas were so WRONG! (Also, the people who arrived just before us mentioned the same thing.) It turns out that it is not a tourist trap as we had presumed. The store is NOT junky, mostly cheap merchandise. We were so surprised by the variety and quality of the selections. Sea Shell City is the cleanest and best organized gift shop in northern Michigan. I apologize for all of my family's snarky comments to each other! We will make Sea Shell City on our list of Must Visit locations.

The Opera House

Reviewed By Rrileyadams - Lansing, Michigan

For those who have never been to this historic site, it should be on your list of must-visit sites. The original Opera House was built in the late 1800s, but the Opera House fell into disrepair and was slated for demolition in the 1970s. A group saved it, renovated it, and it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful venues I have ever seen. The Opera House seats 582 people and the acoutsitcs are remarkable. I have been to probably 100 performances, either as an audience member or a cast member, and the stage still takes away my breath. Performances are staged about every other month, and the prices are very reasonable. Make it a point to visit the Cheboygan Opera House.

Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park

Visitors can witness the power of the creek harnessed to cut timber into lumber at one of the oldest industrial sites on the Upper Great Lakes and soar like an eagle on the zip line during the Adventure Tour.

Reviewed By Sonworshipper - Niceville, Florida

Our large family group came here to do the zip line and climbing wall. We enjoyed both! We also were pleasantly surprised by the old log mill demonstration that was very informative both of the old way things were done then on to the demonstration of the mill itself and its workings. This was very interesting and being able to see its working from so many different angles both inside and out was an added plus! I can't remember the guides name but this white-bearded, gentleman did an excellent job of informing us while entertaining us as well. Upon leaving the park near closing time, we noticed a car in the parking lot with a specialty license that read "Kris Kringle" and we assumed it belonged to this sweet, bearded man who obviously loves continuing to contribute to society in this way. A very nice way to spend a few hours both doing something active as well as learning some very interesting facts of history.

Northern Michigan Dive Center

Reviewed By Ecogoat - Columbus, Ohio

We wanted to snorkel a wreck in the area so stopped in at the dive center. Even though we did not call in advance, they were extremely helpful in providing us with the location and access advice to see a wreck I could reach and snorkel to with my 7-year old daughter (who had just learned to snorkel). They rented us excellent quality wet suits (that fit!) in case the water proved too cool. When it appeared we wouldn't have enough time to do the dive (snorkel), they even offered that we could return the wet suits late, so we had enough time to get in a really good look at the wreck and a pleasant walk back! Keep up the great work, folks!

Family-owned stables and wooded property near Burt Lake. The stables are a series of small sheds that are in poor condition, but the 50+ horses are in fine condition. Family members or neighbors direct the riding sessions through open fields and heavily wooded sections around ponds and streams. Very scenic and enjoyable and very reasonable costs compared to others. Don't be put off by the appearances, it is run down a bit, but good people and a fun horseback ride await. Finish up your deal with a meal at Hoppies Tavern across the street. The stables and Hoppies are 100 yards from Burt Lake, and the public boat launch and dock.

What a great 9 hole locate course!!! Great course, great price and close to the cottages along the beach (we stayed about 2 blocks from the course).

the greens are in great shape and not too fast. Fairways are in great shape and everything is well maintained. Nice mix of water, sand and woods to loose balls into :-). I lost my share.
