Chambery old town is a small area of medieval buildings, mostly houses set amid hidden courtyards and narrow passages. Several of the houses have towers housing spiral staircases - the higher the tower the more important was the family! There are short stretches of the old fortified town walls and some lovely arcades (rue de Boigne). The old town has many bars and restaurants as well as interesting shops, including traditional chocolatiers and cheese mongers. It is well worth a stroll for an hour or so and a drink or meal. If arriving by car, park in one of the big car parks and walk from there.

Hiding under the Duke of Savoy's castle, you might miss the chance to discover this surprising and peculiar little museum. I had the chance to visit it when I first came in Savoy for my studies and I’m glad I did. At first sight, the place has a gloomy, almost haunted vibe which remind me of Agatha Christie’s books. Once I entered, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of different species the museum can expose. I was stunned by their collections, especially the butterflies one. Somehow, I still can’t forget their vibrant colours. I must admit that it was a very pleasant surprise. I met there very instructive and passionate people who took time to present me their masterpieces, their work at the museum and to share with me some little anecdotes about the museum history. I’m looking forward my next visit!

We were amazed at this place. Put 2 Euro in the box by the front door to see the whole place lit up. The 3D paintings on the ceilings made your brain work hard! A lovely place built so long ago that it just makes the mind boggle. English information sheet available at the entrance with information about each chapel.
