Buchanan (/bəˈkænən/ bə-CAN-ən) is a town in Botetourt County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,178 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was the western terminus of the James River and Kanawha Canal when construction on the canal ended.

We run Upper James river in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. TRO offers its customers fun and safe river trips that range from lazy river to whitewater paddling experiences with true mountain views. We offer a variety of single day and multi-day river based camping trips. We are the oldest and most experienced outfitter operating on the Upper James River and have been safely running paddle trips since 1978. We maintain the largest kayak and canoe rental fleets in this part of the state with lots of types of canoe and kayak models to choose from.

Local movie theatre run well by not-for-profit group. See first-run movies just a few later than the mall theatres.i A movie experience unlike any other; you will be served popcorn, soda and candy (at affordable prices) by volunteers who are happy and proud to serve their community. Good picture quality and sound. The seats are original- so don't expect a modern day relining seat. Do expect to enjoy a movie and all it's trimmings more than you would at the mall---because you paid about half the cost (or less) for everything. A gem of the community that welcomes visitors to a good time.

Swinging Bridge is now open for pedestrian crossing!! I went with my family to see the swinging bridge, I was happy to see it was reopened after repairs. Buchanan is a true gem in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Be sure to also take a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway!!
