The Simplon Pass (French: Col du Simplon; German: Simplonpass; Italian: Passo del Sempione) (2,005 m or 6,578 ft) is a high mountain pass between the Pennine Alps and the Lepontine Alps in Switzerland. It connects Brig in the canton of Valais with Domodossola in Piedmont (Italy). The pass itself and the villages on each side of it, such as Gondo, are in Switzerland. The Simplon Tunnel was built beneath the vicinity of the pass in the early 20th century to carry rail traffic between the two countries. The lowest point of the col, and the lowest point on the watershed between the basins of the Rhone and the Po in Switzerland lies in marshland about 500 m (1,640 ft) west of the Simplon Pass settlement at an altitude of 1,994 m or 6,542 ft.[2] Rotelsee is a lake located near the pass at an elevation of 2,028 m (6,654 ft).

The Brigerbad thermal facility reopened in December 2014 and is now a year-round oasis of wellbeing for both body and soul. The complex houses seven unique bathing areas that are just waiting to be explored – from diverse outdoor pools with gigantic water slides to indoor health pools, a spa area spread over two floors and accommodating a hammam and sauna, plus wellness treatments and a restaurant. The total bathing area amounts to 2,600 square metres, half of which can be enjoyed all year round
We spent a fantastic morning. Nice pools, our son loved the pool for kids. Tasty lunch served from very kind personal. We will visit the Thermalquelle again!

Kaspar Stockalper was an early capitalist genius. He simply sold and bought everything that promised to be profitable on those days. His impressive palace in Brig is a testimony to his wealth and worldly power. The building is the biggest private building of the 17th century in Switzerland. Visit this representative castle and learn about the symbolism and the history of that place. The adjoining Gardens as well as the exhibition "Passage Simplon" are worth a visit too. Opening Hours and Guided Tours Summer 1 May - 31 October 2016 Tuesday - Sunday 9.30 am / 10.30 am / 1.30 pm / 2.30 pm / 3.30 pm / 4.30 pm* * May and October: no tours at 4.30 pm
Stockalper (1609–1691) was called "The King of Simplon". The merchant, banker, large scale entrepreneur, military official and politician built Stockalper Castle in the years 1651 to 1671. The castle is the largest private building constructed in the 17th century in Switzerland. The palace has three towers with gilded onion domes and reflects the immensity of Stockalper's wealth.
Stockalper's life is showcased in the castle musuem. For a time he monopolized the salt trade and transportation. The guided tour through the castle takes visitors to the impressive castle hall (which has original paneling dating back to the 17th century), the castle chapel and the castle Gardens. Furthermore, the castle is still today the headquarters of Brig's municipal administration.

We flew with our skis on and were able to touch the ground at the ski slopes and fly again. this was really a once in a lifetime...MoreThanks for your positive comment. For sure Belalp is one of the nicest places to paraglide and the sensation of taking off at 3100m with skis is unique. Hope to see you next winter again.

I had read of the walk which parallels the BLS railway line, as it climbs the northern side of the steep Rhone Valley, out of Brig.
I was keen to do a morning walk. On joining a local train in Brig, the conductor advised me to go up the ramp and alight at Hohtenn, walk back along the track and then catch a train at Ausserberg, for the fifteen minute ride back to Brig.
I took four hours to do the walk. It is not all down hill. There is quite a bit of climbing, as well.
The track is well signposted. It has many explanatory notices along the way, in four languages, explaining the history of the building of the BLS railway, in the first quarter of the twentieth century.
The track does not continually follow the railway. It gives the walker commanding views of the Rhone Valley, an experience of walking through a number of construction tunnels, the opportunity to see many varieties of local plants and wildlife, and places to sit for a picnic.
I particularly enjoyed checking out the water race, paralleling the track, which in places was carved from logs slotted into each other.
I did the walk in May on a generally cloudy day. It was very pleasant, with the opportunities for lots of great photographs. The railway conductor said that it was a good time of the year to do the walk, as it can be very hot in the summer.
The walk was particularly enjoyable, as it had so much variety. I was so glad I did it.

ViaStockalper – The attraction of opposites Times were hard, the roads dangerous. Three centuries ago Kaspar Stockalper, the «King of the Simplon», seized the chance to improve the old mule track over the Simplon Pass, thereby laying the foundation of his huge trading empire. The contrasts of the ViaStockalper give it its special appeal: north of the pass it crosses the lonely Taferna valley, while to the south it goes through the wild Gondo gorge. And all along the way many of Stockalper's monumental buildings still stand.
During last weekend I decided to follow this historic mountain route. Simple path and well indicated. Magnificent landscape vision, I fulfilled my Nikon memory cards (10Gb)

Close to the Aletsch Arena ski area this is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the thermal baths. We only used these but you have other spa options such as massages. There is ample free parking and the front of house facilities are clean, tidy and easy to use. Changing facilities, hairdryers, mirrors, lockers are all good. There are several indoor and outdoor pools of different temperatures. They also have different types of water jets to massage your body. Loungers are available if you want to take a rest. There is also a 3m high rock to jump off into one of the pools. I would suggest you go for 2 to 3 hours to get maximum enjoyment.
The only down side was that some of the painted floor areas in the indoor pool surround were beginning to lift due to heat and water. This however did not effect the overall enjoyment we had.
