This town square, built next to and named after Freiburg's famous cathedral, is still a major center of the city's social activity.

There is a nice market near the Cathedral. And Rote lange is absolutely tasty! And next week-end we had fish sandwiches. As well as bought some samples of German sausages and French cheeses. Besides we bought some of the farmer produce of an excellent quality for daily use which was very helpful as we were staying in an apartment nearby for 9 days with self service! Recommend very much!

Lichtentaler Allee

This beautiful park is home to the town's famous casino.

We had the good fortune to book an Airbnb for the entire month of September right by Lichtentaler Allee. We LOVED walking into the city along this beautiful path/ parkway. Along the way there was a gazebos, dahlia garden, incredible, stately rose garden, statues, a fountain, magnificent mansions, museums, old trees, a large meadow, a small canal/river full of ducks, clay tennis courts with an adjoining Italian cafe that we really liked. It was quiet and safe. We walked into town probably a dozen times. Sometimes in the early morning, sometimes late at night. There were always others around on foot or on bikes, even occasionally in carriages. We ALWAYS felt safe and serene. We could have driven and parked in Baden-Baden but we always chose to walk, even if we were tired from a day’s exploring. It was that enjoyable. It was THE PERFECT LOCATION for an extended stay and visit to Schwarzwald and Alsace. I would do it again in a minute!

The market surrounds the the cathedral in the center of the old section of town. The market gives the square a vitality with vendors selling local, seasonal produce, flowers, food, and other products. Concerts on the cathedral's organ occur every Saturday morning and feature both traditional and contemporary works. You can take tours of the cathedral by the docents and even visit the workshop where new stonework is carved using traditional tools.

The ride on the funicular railway is fabulous, the views from the top of Merkur are stunning, nice cafe at the top for a beer and snacks (or a meal). This is a Baden-Baden must do. Can't recommend highly enough. You can get the bus from town, or its about a half hour walk (very hilly on the way there, lovely walk back though!)

Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald

The treetop walk is 1,250 meters long and up to 20 meters high. It has activity and learning stations, and its highlight is the 40 meter high, architecturally unique view tower. Once you reach its uppermost platform, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view out over thick woodlands of the Black Forest.

Great walk in nature even for those who are not too active. Not too steep. Unfortunately, the slide is closed in the winter, so we had to walk back down. Very cool engineering on the tower itself. All signs are in German, but there is an handout in english. There is a lot of construction going on just south of the tower and it looks like next year there will be some very cool and very large children's play areas.

At the cascades of the Gutach River, water tumbles nearly 600 feet over seven naturally created steps, resulting in a marvelous site for visitors.

Beautiful scenery and worth a visit. Nice hiking trails and places arranged to take photos. There's cute little red and black squirrels to entertain you as well. Because of the weather, some of the slippery trails were closed off. The Triberg village is cute and kept very clean. There are restrooms near the falls and information booths.

Schlossberg

This mountain located on the outskirts of Freiburg provides both fabulous views of the city and peaceful opportunities for hiking.

Reviewed By foodybyheart - Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany

Visit the Schlossberg (castle hill) to have a good overview over the city of Freiburg and its´s location between the Black Forest and the Upper Rhine Valley. Discover the small medieval streets snugglingclose to the Schlossberg, and, on clear days, yenjoy a view of the Alsacian Vosges in the distance. Access is easy, when you start at the Schwabentor, the northern town gate. In some ten minutes you reach the beer garden that provides a lovely view and good beer. Leaving the beer garden and ascending a bit more you pass a children´s playing ground and end up at the place, where the medieval cannons had been defending the town. The view here is heaven for photographers! Basically you can follow faily short as well as very long hiking tours from here into the Black Forest, which are perfectly signposted.

Black Forest Museum (Schwarzwaldmuseum)

Reviewed By moondust7 - Huntsville, United States

My husband and I absolutely loved this museum!! It was larger than we expected! Items were spaced over 3 floors, and included old musical instruments / machines (super cool!), clothing/dress from over the years, mined minerals and rocks, and other items from the Black Forest region. Highly recommend a visit to this museum. Definitely have some coins to play a couple of the music machines. They are really neat.
