For $25 you get a paddle wheel boat ride to island, horse carriage ride, tour of mansion and also includes museum. Get tickets at museum in town, and walk the 2 blocks to the boat. Note to park in spaces allocated to museum only. The boat ride takes about 20 - 25 minutes and runs on the top of the hour. You can then get the carriage ride on the half hour, then do mansion tour at quarter past the hour. Finally, you can then take the boat back. The whole thing takes 3 hours, not including museum tour. Give yourself a half day and start early. At latest, take the 3:00 pm boat over to the island. The entire experience is excellent.

Campus Martius Museum

This museum has great exhibits on local history dating from prehistoric times to 19th century and beyond. The colonial history is well presented as is the early settlement of the town. I found the Appalachian Migration exhibition downstairs of particular interest and very informative. It was well presented and highlighted the descendants of the Scots Irish who populated the Appalachian regions and their move from rural to urban environments- if you read "Hillbilly Elegy", this will fill in the gaps of history of which you may not have been aware. They have an excellent exhibit of how Americans innovated European technology to adapt to the New World, and some very interesting Civil War materials. I only wish I had more time to spend there!

My husband and I spent hours here, though it was going to be a quick stop. It is brimming with artifacts from several generations of family members, who saved everything. Some 18th century furniture, and original documents, books, etc. Some things one would expect to find at the Smithsonian. Two wonderful docent ladies spent lots of time with us, though it was a very hot day, and not all the museum is air conditioned. We learned so much from their explanations. They could answer any question.

My husband and I love, love, love Holl's Chocolates. We live out of town so order from their website. My favorite is the caramel. My husband loves any truffle, especially the dark chocolate ones. My favorite truffle is passionfruit. The cherry cordials are the best you can get. I could go on and on. We order custom boxes so we can get our favorite flavors.

They are small-town enough to pay close attention to your order and call you if they think you may have made a mistake. There are two addresses that I usually have them ship to and they made it easy for me to select the correct one, depending on where we are.

You can't go wrong with Holl's Chocolates.

There are hiking trails and picnic pavilion, close to the viewing deck. There is a nice rustic playground for children. We enjoyed the view and the interpretive signs. The restrooms needed scrubbed with disinfectant. Please note that there is no GPS address, just vague directions to take the Marrtown Rd exit off Rt. 50. That would be Rt. 50 West, just a very short drive out of Parkersburg WV.

My wife and I recently toured the Blennerhassett Museum in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Coupled with Blennerhassett Island the overall history and displays are above average. For those who don't know, the Blennerhassetts were involved with the Arron Burr attempt to create his own country. For those who are interested in the Jefferson period of history, this is a can't miss opportunity. The staff is very friendly and the experience won't be soon forgotten. Taking the paddle wheel boat over the Blennerhassett Island is also fun.
