It seems like most folks have a grandmother, great-uncle or some other distant relative that used to live in Brooklyn, or perhaps a friend that lives there now. In the early 1900s, it was a mecca for immigrants arriving via Ellis Island. A hundred years later, young professionals and artists left pricey Manhattan digs for Brooklyn's cheaper and more expansive space. Neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, were restored and reborn as funky enclaves. Walk or bike over the historic Brooklyn Bridge (or ride the subway) to Brooklyn Heights for a stroll along the Promenade and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Meander through Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for a taste of nature in the urban wilds. Catch a performance at the world-famous Brooklyn Academy of Music. From the delicious Italian restaurants of Bensonhurst to the Irish bars that line the avenues of Bay Ridge, from the hotdogs and rollercoasters of Coney Island to the bagels and handball courts of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a state of mind as well as a dynamic community. Discover why, no matter where people move on to, they remain Brooklynites at heart.

Discover a Jazz Fest and Fish Fry at a Historical Landmarked Brooklyn Brownstone. "REMEMBERING WHEN" a celebration of music lived in the heart of Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood. Enjoy a live jazz concert performed in an intimate setting with a fish fry, and open-mic session. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BrownstoneJAZZ is a naturally acoustic sound LIVING ROOM up close for a personal touch Featured in a Brooklyn Historic Bedford Stuyvesant 19th Century Victorian Built Townhouse Bed and Breakfast called Sankofa Aban From this quiet friendly tree lined block, the amazing sound of Authentic Jazz comes alive within a parlor, called The Room, typically used for small gatherings, back in the day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What to expect- A continual effort to present an affordable evening where only today's best Jazz Artists gather to concert in a classic 19th c.style Townhouse, located in the Historical Landmark Gateway of Bedford Stuyvesant's tree-lined community. Many have created different, more up to date ways of keeping jazz alive than this venue. Only, BSJazz keeps jazz alive in a room which has kept a more back in the day style. Enjoy being entertained by great american jazz in a socially diverse, cultured way. The sound of music radiates off the 1880s wooded areas, which allows for natural acoustic listening, considered unusual in these times. The walls and floors are shared by original style wooden and brass instruments played by amazing artists. By sitting in the middle of this area, the musical feel is haunting in the very intimate building. The beautiful design of BrownstoneJAZZ is an extremely smaller version of New York's larger fascinating Music Halls, but just as effective by leaving you astounded. There's a time in the evening when the audience can become a part of the entertainment, and perform with World Class Musicians. The wonderful talent that performs during that time makes it more than an OPEN MIC. The performers in many cases are wonderful artist their selves. Often enough, they have gained showcasing performances, at BrownstoneJAZZ. BrownstoneJAZZ is all about the music. Yet, there must be a break during the festival, to refresh the musicians and audience with a home cooked meal, prepared by the evening hostess DebbieMc. A delicious buffet of our Famous Fried Fish, Slaw and Corn Bread, keeps within another Jazz tradition of a late night Fish Fry. Back in the day you found that the best Jazz and fish fries were found in community houses. Once again after the fish fry seats are filled, and the night continues till the enjoyment of the last note has played. Then the audience many times raise to their feet in applauds, and reluctantly descend from what we like to call 'THE ROOM'. Or, as Lester Holt called it "THE HOUSE OF JAZZ" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Special all inclusive Group JazzTours Available upon request for 15-30 people.)

Before we were about to leave NYC, we stopped by the mural, since we were staying in Brooklyn already. It took us more time to get there then to get our photos, since we went on a weekday. The mural is as pictured. A great tribute to the Bed-Stuy legend. Good quick pit-stop for your Instagram shots

New York is the best city in the world. But you don’t experience it just by walking up Fifth Avenue or going to Empire State Building. It's a city you need to discover. And you can do so by visiting what New Yorkers visit, finding hidden local places, going to secret events, getting into the best bars, and hanging out in Brooklyn and lesser-known Manhattan. And trust us, no matter where you go, you will still see the main attractions -- it’s hard to avoid them. But we promise you a different, more entertaining and sustainable experience. The city is so multifaceted, we can tailor tours to your personality and interests. In the end, you'll love it or hate it. But you'll know the true New York, not just "the tourists' New York,” crowded with people, skyscrapers, and outdated and overpriced restaurants, none of which represent real New York.

Considered Brooklyn's largest African-American community, this historic area features twelve blocks of bay-fronted townhouses that look the same as they did in the late 19th century.
If you're into architecture, I recommend spending half a day (at least!) exploring Bed Stuy— one of the most picturesque neighborhoods that Brooklyn has to offer. The neighborhood has one of the most intact collections of Queen Anne and Beaux-Arts architecture in NYC area. I would start the tour from the Alhambra apartments building, Montrose Morris's masterpiece, and definitely check out the Akwaaba Mansion, an 1860s estate that is now a bed and breakfast. And if you are into brownstones, and provided the weather is nice, I would suggest to literally dedicate 2-3 of hours to simply walking around Stuyvesant Heights. For our walk I used the recommendation from the Brooklyn Eagle ("Top Intriguing Places in Bed Stuy) Copy-pasting their suggested route below. We were not disappointed! P.S. This neighborhood was immortalized by Spike Lee, and used to have high crime up through the 90's. This is no longer the case today, with multiple cafes and coffee shops open everywhere. It's quite safe.' Here is what we used as a guide for the brownstone tour: "Some of the most striking brownstone rows are on MacDonough Street between Lewis and Stuyvesant avenues, where there are front lawns; on Greene Avenue between Bedford and Nostrand avenues, with its magisterial homes; on Macon Street between Tompkins and Marcy avenues, where the façades glow in early evening light; on Jefferson Street near the corner of Marcy Avenue, where the homes have regal rooflines; and on Madison Street off Marcy Avenue, where the façades are candy-colored."
