Bald Head Island, historically Smith Island, is a village located on the east side of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. Compared to the city of Wilmington to the north, the village of Bald Head Island is small and somewhat remote. It is only accessible by ferry from the nearby town of Southport. There are few cars on the island; instead, residents drive modified electric golf carts. Bald Head Island is nationally recognized for its sea turtle nesting activity.

Old Baldy, built 1817, is North Carolina's oldest lighthouse. Restoration projects by the not for profit Old Baldy Foundation allows visitors today to enjoy the tower and climb to the top for a breathtaking view of the island and surrounding area. Tickets available in the Keeper's Cottage, home to the Smith Island Museum of History and lighthouse gift shop.
Old Baldy Lighthouse (Bald Head Island Lighthouse)Is definitely worth the trip out to the island. The ferry is a bit pricey at $23, and the parking is nine dollars at the marina, but the lighthouse is a short walk from the ferry port. You can be there in 3 to 5 minutes from the port on foot. If you want to do other activities on the island, it would be helpful to rent a golf cart. Those rentals can be quite pricey. However, it is a lovely island with lots to do.

This was the first time my wife and I have visited Bald Head Island together....We got off the ferry and headed right over to Riverside Adventure Company to rent a couple of bicycles for our day of exploring. We were met by Warren who was working on a bike in the cellar bicycle storage area. He was real nice, pleasant, and found us two bikes even though he was getting short of ones for rent. He took our information and credit card and added two baskets to our rentals and we were off and peddling... Their rental bicycles are comfortable and easy to pedal...They seemed to be well maintained. After touring on the island for around 3 1/2 hours, including a lunch stop we headed back to the port area to return our bicycles. The staff at Riverside Adventure Company is just real helpful and polite and you get the feeling they welcome your business.....
