Alexandria is a city and the county seat of Douglas County, Minnesota. First settled in 1858, it was named after brothers Alexander and William Kinkead from Maryland. The form of the name alludes to Alexandria, Egypt, a center of learning and civilization.

Rated a Gem “must-see” point of interest by AAA. This kid-friendly museum has a Scavenger Hunt for the young and young at heart! Our most famous artifact is the Kensington Runestone and its mysterious runic message. Was it carved in 1362? Recent laboratory and linguistic analysis of the stone suggests yes! But even as more supporting evidence of its authenticity is revealed, controversy continues to swirl around this internationally renowned artifact. Visit the museum, see the Runestone and learn its story…then decide for yourself. The Runestone Museum also features pioneer displays, a wildlife exhibit, a World War II living room with 1940’s music playing, a children’s discovery area and special limited time exhibits. The museum’s Native American exhibit garnered national attention when our rare 1920s Ojibwe jingle dress appeared in the American Indian Art magazine. There is now a decorated full sized Tipi in the Native American camp diorama. Fort Alexandria is a delightful collection of restored buildings from 1868 to 1910 that includes a furnished township school, pioneer church, log home, and stage stop. The large Annex has many displays, including a 40 foot replica Viking ship and a huge 1906 steam tractor. The third annual History Live! in Fort Alexandria will be Fri. and Sat. June 23 - 24, 2017. Enjoy live historic reenactments from the Fur Trade, Pioneer, and Civil War eras, kid’s activities and family fun. Check the museum website for dates and admission prices. The museum is open year round.
There is controversy over the discovery of North America by the Norse, but once you see the exhibits at this small museum, there will be no doubt in your mind. The place is well laid out, clean, and well-signed, The longboat is very impressive, and we had been in Norway earlier this year! I suggest going out of your way to see this place if you are anywhere in the area.

The grounds were quite lovely on a fall day. The main building was large and nicely decorated with a great gift shop. Very well organized. Live music under a tent was a nice addition and the stomping competition was fun to watch. A lot of tipsy people leaving the venue by the time it closed at 7pm which must get annoying for those working the event but the very well-organized shuttle service to the local hotels made it much safer and convenient.

We have biked many of the trails in MN but never Central Lakes. Must say we were very impressed. The trail is nice and wide, it is like you are on a small road, and very well maintained. The scenery is beautiful, we really liked like section heading northwest out of Alexandria.

And these guys have mastered it! They don't shy away from experimenting, but they understand the fundamentals. With 10 on tap almost any palate can be satisfied. The flights are a great way of sampling the variety, and then you can jump into the 5 buck pints. The description cards are great for narrowing down your choices, as the accurately describe what you'll get.
Oh, and the beers are freakin' FANTASTIC,

Many famous lodges are found around the lake.
We stayed at the Viking Bay Resort on Lake Miltona July 19, 2013 -Everything about this resort is wonderful. The Staff are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are spotless and spacious, beds are very comfortable, They have a nice gift store where you can pick up a souvenier or if you get cold when you're out in a boat you can buy a sweatshirt or something. They have Caribou coffee which is really nice and they have snack foods if you get hungry while you are there and don't wanna run out someplace. They have a great selection of wines alot of them from MN. They have a nice tackle shop and fish cleaning house. We rented a Pontoon for 4 hrs and the staff was so helpful in telling us where the fish were biting. We caught numerous sunnys, bluegills, and pumpkinheads and I caught a couple baby walleyes that were too small to save. And a baby smallmouth bass. There pontoon was very nice, very comfortable and they have gas right on site made it very nice and convenient. We had a great time there and definently will be back again hopefully to spend even more time there next time. All of us had alot of fun would for sure recommend this place to anyone looking for somewhere comfortable to relax with great fishing.

Considered by some as evidence that the Vikings did discover America before Christopher Columbus.
We learned about the Kensington Runestone and toured their lovely museum. The kids even learned a couple new games (that are not electronic!) and we purchased one of them in the gift store. Well worth the entrance fee. A must see if you are in the area and enjoy learning about Minnesota history.

Our family met at this hotel/waterpark because it was centrally located between North Branch and Fargo. What a great water park for adults and kids.
Rooms are a little outdated, but overall nice
