Welcome to Germany's largest island, with a myriad of terrains to delight outdoor explorers, from sandy coastlines to dramatic chalk cliffs. It's been a seaside resort since 1818 and is one of Germany's top vacation spots. There's something for everyone, from the two national parks to a former royal residence and a castle to the beach, of course - head to Binz if sunbathing is your primary objective.

Well, if you like the chalk cliffs or not, everybody has to decide for himself. They are characteristic for Rügen, so take a look at them. There are different places where you can especially look at this natural spectacle. Of course the Victoria observation deck is a nice point (maybe the most beautiful one)? But along the Hochuferweg there are so many beautiful perspectives that you should not miss. If you go there by car, it's your own fault (parking, fees, still walking). You can not get lost... and public transportation goes there as well. We saved the entrance fee, because we were not interested in the Documentation Center, only movement in the open air, view, once from Sassnitz, once from Lomme. Important: Near Königsstuhl it will be full, just as near Sassnitz. In between there is a lot of peace and quiet. Recommended if you are good on foot, to walk back down to the sea (to Sassnitz). Here the rocky outcrops become really dramatic.

After bicycling from Binz, we made a stop in Selling. A special seaside resort with the wooden pier as the main jewel in the crown.

Adored this little steam train that runs between Binz and Goehren. Most of the carriages are traditional ones with a roofless viewing one in the middle, which was amazing on a sunny day. There is a restaurant car also. It felt like being on an actual toy train going through toy towns & villages and stretches of forest. Throughout there was the smell of the steam engine and train hooting. Going from Baabe to Goehring was a steal at £2.20 per person (single) There is a dedicated bicycle carriage too. I read somewhere that the train runs every 2 hours but we found it to be leaving hourly (not sure what the explanation is). You can buy the tickets at the station ticket office or on the train itself. Staff were very friendly.

Nature is everywhere and always changing. Let it be spring, summer, fall or winter - the look, feel and smell of Prora‘s beech forest at the Prora DBU-Natural Heritage Site is never the same. The Naturerbe Zentrum Rügen is open for visitors to experience and explore nature throughout all the different seasons. The 1,250-metre-long treetop walk takes you through the forest canopy and is packed with information and adventure stations. The “Eagle’s Nest” viewing platform, 40 metres above the ground, provides a fantastic view over the Island of Rügen, the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden and the Baltic Sea. The modern Environmental Education Centre with its exhibition called „Experiencing and Understanding Nature“ is filled with exciting activities and fun facts for the curious at heart. A variety of offers and hikes. Local experts offer an array of guided excursions through the forest. The NatureLab is a great place for children and youths to get hands-on experience.
You take a walk the forest! Then you can see the entire island from the top of this cool "building". And you have a lot of games you can do...and obviously some cool information!

Nice sandy beach with ample space for dogs. Clean and well maintained. North beach close to parking #9 is best suited for dogs.
