Montepulciano makes a great base for exploring the Tuscan hill towns. Just make sure to pack well-broken-in walking shoes, because cars aren’t allowed in the center of town. Explore the Duomo of Montepulciano and the Palazzo Tarugi… or sample the local wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which has been praised for centuries.

What I can say is that if you are visiting Val d'orcia and you know what you can expect, this church with its beauty, its Renaissance architecture, its harmony and its harmonious insertion into the landscape represents the Val d'Orcia at its best.

Gattavecchi Winery, known as Cantina Gattavecchi, is the cellar in the town centre -the vinyard is at 20 minutes distance - of an old wine making family, la famiglia Gattavecchi. Here we offer guided tours and tastings of the wines and local products as cheeses and other specialties. It is also a family restaurant! You will discover La Cucina di Lilian, in the charming refectory of the old Monastery of Santa Maria dei Servi (XIII Century), that proposes wonderful traditional dishes made by Lilian Gattavecchi paired with the family wines. Cooking classes on request.
Our first day in Val d'orcia, the 4 of us drove directly to Cantina Gattavecchi Winery. What a wonderful experience. The food and wine pairings were fabulous. It was fun to hear about the family winery and meet everyone. We loved the wines, loved the food and loved the family. The last tasting of wine and dessert we had in the cellar which was a great atmosphere too. This was truly a great experience and I highly recommend to everyone. Some of the wines are still young and great for laying down for a few years so if you are interested, ask for an older vintage to buy and take with you. We bought a 2007 Vino Nobile and opened it a few days later while in the Dolomiti and yum yum was it delicious!

One of the most pleasant things to do in the whole of Tuscany is to park at the bottom of this lovely hill-town's historic centre at the Porta al Prato and stroll up the roughly one kilometer to the Piazza Grande at the top for lunch or coffee. It's a reasonably gently incline so most people should manage it and you can always drop your pace for a look at the shops and wine stores. We thought the quality of the stores had improved somewhat since the last time we visited and there were some quality goods on display. There always seem to be enough people on this street for it to be buzzy, but without the frenetic, tour-group driven bedlam of Florence or Siena. And the tourists seem to be calmer, happier, and less pressured. Definitely a lovely way to spend half a day.

The Centro Storico of Montepulciano is charming with plenty of architecture to admire and bars or cellars to try the local wine. There is a lovely square, a fort and cathedral along with wine cellars. Located on top of a hill, you get some wonderful views of the Tuscan countryside. However, because the town is on top of a hill there are fairly steep roads to climb as you explore the town. There's not parking inside the Centro Storico so you can't avoid the climb (which is fine for most people but if you've got mobility problems or a buggy it could be a problem.
