The 10 Best Things to do Good for Kids in Midi-Pyrénées, Occitanie

January 29, 2022 Diedre Savory

Stretching from the wooded Dordogne to the towering peaks of the Pyrenees, this vast region is a popular winter sports destination, but one without the hordes that besiege the Alps. Spring's melted snows lure kayakers and rafting enthusiasts. In summer, amateur and advanced hikers take to the hills.

The magnificent brick building with its amazing Gothic entrance is very hard to describe because it is so huge and apparently the largest brick Cathedral in that part of the world. But... when you enter inside that is when your breath is taken away...it is beautiful. Although it is a French Cathedral the Art is Italian and it is spectacular. I actually visited more than once because I could not absorb everything. The history, the color, the Art ,amazing and a definite "must see" in Albi.

Gorgeous part of the world with stunning view and beautiful lakes - in some of the lakes you can see trout cruising around feeding on the surface - hiking is quite vertical but worth the effort- we had a 1000 foot gain in elevation on our hike- if you have mobility issues this might not be for you - the road up there is barely 1 lane in spots with lots of switchbacks but the views make it worth while - just go slow and let the locals and the aggressive drivers pass you.

When we decided to explore Toulouse, we headed directly to the Musee d'Archaeologie ...and found it right beside the basilica...so after the museum we toured it as well. A lovely church with and interesting crypt with reliquaries...always great to immerse in local history.

Church of Les Jacobins

Reviewed By kathrynh992 - Sonoma, United States

I visited this historic ( it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the body of St. Thomas Aquinas has been there since 1369) and beautiful church during a Sunday mass. This is an active church with a dedicated congregation. I, along with other visitors, were quiet and respectful of the mass. It was acceptable to very quietly walk the inside perimeter and to unobtrusively take photos (make sure your camera or smart phone is set so that the “click” is silent - the clicking sound when a photo is taken is disruptive). It is difficult to describe the beauty and serenity of this space - the arches, windows, altars, parishioners, and stonework of the structure itself. This is a must-see place.

Gouffre de Padirac

The Gouffre de Padirac, the most famous cave in Europe, is considered as one of the most interesting geological sites in France. After a vertiginous descent, by lift or stairs, of 103 metres, you embark on a boat trip along the subterranean river with spectacular views on the galleries. That's when you discover the "Grande Pendeloque" - a gigantic stalactite of 60 metres high - hanging by a string, it appears to admire itself in the "Lac de la Pluie". You then walk towards the "Lac des Gours" or the "Salle du Grand Dôme" with its 94 metres high vault.

Pic Du Midi

Pic du Midi in the Hautes-Pyrénées. An exceptional destination in high mountain for the holidays and the weekends: families, tourist groups, school outings, events and seminars of companies. All year long, access for all by cable car from La Mongie, at feet of the Col du Tourmalet. At the summit the most beautiful panorama of the Pyrenees, a museum on the astronomy and the history of the Pic du Midi, a Planetarium, a traditional restaurant of altitude. Mountain bike downhill.
