Safe, fun, and open for Locals and Visitors! Lydgate Farms is run by our fifth generation Kaua’i family. We grow high-quality cacao to make the finest craft chocolate. We also grow award-winning vanilla and honey. Our 46-acre farm sits above the town of Kapa’a, between Sleeping Giant and Mt. Wai’ale’ale. Lydgate Farms is in an ahupua’a (land division) named Olohena, known for its rolling hills and the numerous springs and rivers that make this valley fertile for growing. Often called the Garden Island, Kaua’i is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands and, as a result, has the most developed soils and fertile growing conditions. In addition to our specialty crops, you’ll find a wide variety of botanicals around our farm that influence the taste of our honey and chocolate. Visit us in Wailua for an interactive farm tour and chocolate tasting.
What an amazing experience. Before I go too into details, I can say with 100% certainty that I recommend this tour for one specific reason, Alex. She was absolutely amazing! She was fun, knowledgeable, kept us on our toes and interested the whole three hours, and most importantly she was PASSIONATE about the place. Things to bring: water bottle, bug spray (they have plenty there for you to use too! But if you’re like me, the mosquitoes find you specifically alluring and will destroy you any chance they can), rain jacket (it’s Kauai, you should have brought one already lol – although they have umbrellas to borrow if you absolutely need one), I recommend solid shoes too because you’re not necessarily walking far but it’s downhill and a bit slippery at one point. The tour starts off at the top with all their wonderful goodies on display. Alex will go over the history of the farm with you, everything they’ve grown from bamboo, to vanilla beans, to chocolate, etc. when the tour starts she’ll walk to see some of the cacao trees right away and tell you all about how long it takes to grow the trees, to grow the fruit, to test the fruit to see when it’s ready, etc. She’ll then take you down the path and tell you all about the different species of plants and other really cool fruits and things they’re growing (they have black bamboo, papyrus, they are growing peppercorn and vanilla, HONEY!, etc). You next get to taste some local exotic fruit which was super fun! As someone who lives on Oahu and has for 5 years I was super familiar with most of the fruits, but she even surprised me with a few! You end the tour getting back to the cacao trees, being part of the 1% who have tasted the raw cacao and then taste testing a BUNCH of chocolate! She’ll give you not only chocolate from Lydgate farms, but chocolates from all over the world and it’s amazing to taste all the different flavors in the same % chocolate bards (like I think we had 2 kinds of 70% dark and they all were so different, one was sweet, one was bitter). You learn how they make the chocolate and the whole process to getting you the chocolate bar in your hands. We had so much fun and our group, after 3 hours, really became a fun friendly group that we were all sad to have leave when it ended. I cannot recommend this tour enough, it was a blast and I’d do it again in a heart beat!

Take an eco-adventure Kayak/Hike to a Secret Waterfall! Among all the rivers available to adventure seekers, the Wailua River Valley seems to be one of those special places. Kayak 4 miles roundtrip on a Class Zero river, combined with a 1.5 mile moderate to strenuous hike through a tropical rainforest, wading through streams, and traversing muddy trails to get to the beautiful 120' Uluwehi Falls.

Great for all ages, my sister and parents and I had a wonderful bike ride along the coast. The paved path made for easy riding and there were plenty of pull-offs and scenic overlooks. You might even see a sea turtle or two! The rented bikes had baskets and bells on them. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat!
