This is a place we'd never heard of before stumbling upon it, and were glad we did. It's a town with a long history, with a historic centre being testament to that. It's a lovely area to wander around and soak up history, at the confluence of 2 small rivers, offshoots of the Danube. Tourists seem to be starting to trickle in but it feels far less commercial than some other towns in the region. We visited in the summer when it was nice to also sit out and eat or have a coffee. We're also just been this month before Christmas and enjoyed the Christmas markets around the town, including the open air ice rink by the river. There were a number of nice touches, such as faux reindeer and Santa's sleigh for the kids to sit on, and free games for the kids to play in the main square. There's a big ferris wheel by the river too though it was slightly pricey for the whole family so we enjoyed it from the bottom.

I visited the Gyor Zoo with my family. We have not been there for around 7-8 years, so the change was amazing for us, as I (unfortunately) have not heard about the reconstruction/renovation in the zoo. We were delighted by the cleanliness, the easy access to animals, the animal show and petting (owl, pigs, llama). THere is contruction ongoing but for us this was not annoying. We especially adored the open wood at the original area of the Vadaspark (Wild Park) where we could feed the animals who were curious enough to come to us and liked our petting as well. However, I was surprised to see the condition of the only horse we saw, at the back of the zoo. It was very sad, very thin - I hope it is only a temporary illness!

I have not visited this place since my childhood, and it really came as a suprise to see how well the reconstruction and re-themed/educational side has been strengthened. After a nice stroll/climb on the path on the edge of the cliffs/plateau and catch a full sight on the nearby area, we climbed down the staircase, into the interior parts of the mine. The sizes of the carved stones are amazing. At first we were suprised by the sharks, but quickly realized how well the old sea concept fitted int othe concept. Sound effects were also great. The short film they showed quickly summarized how the mine generated through millions of years, how uncovering then mining of this limestone happened, and which famous buildings' construction used these stones. Staff wasa friendly, told us the details: expected timing on the path, short films times in the mine, toilet facility, etc. Near the entrance we had ice-cream. Inside the mine it is cold.

Three generations went up to the look-out, in total 11 people between 8 months and 67 years. We all enjoyed it a lot. The parking is at the Adventure Park (also well worth a visit), and then there is a 900 meter walk to the tower. On the way there, there are several stops along the way with tasks for kids to fulfill. You can get a paper to collect stamps in the beginning of it, and if you do all of them, you can get a gift. These tasks are suitable for kids between 2 and 9 years old. At the tower, there is a cafe a small museum and a pretty big playground. The kids liked it a lot. It costs 400 forint for adults and 300 forint for kids to get up to the top of the tower. It is worth getting up, since the view is amazing! You can see all around the surrounding areas of Sopron.

We love walking around old town Sopron. Highly recommend going up in the Fire Tower, visiting the various churches, eating the local food, going into the grocery on the ring around the Old Town, seeing the old Roman Ruins, going in Dec. so you can see the Christmas Market. It's all fun and interesting, like stepping back in time.
