Wesselman Woods Nature Center

Reviewed By AdrianBambini

My spouse and I visited Wesselman on a sunny afternoon during the COVID crisis. We live in KY. As a botanist, Ii was vey interested to see what was available there. The Nature Center Building was closed but the walking trails were open. The old growth trees were stunning. Much of the pathways are slightly raised wooden platforms with some dating back to the 1980s. Although it had not rained for a day or so, some of these wooden platform were slightly slippery. I thought the small native plants garden right inside the main entrance was especially nice. There must have been 30 different plant species on display. I would suggest that they add more plant labels so that the visitors can more easily identify and learn what is there. There are a lot of nice signage along the trails and some are showing their age. I look forward to returning to Wesselman very soon to walk the remaining trails. I saw some super-sized mayapples, sessile trilliums and bent triiliums. With the late freeze we just had, I am wondering if any of the paw paws will bear fruit this year.

Bosse Field

Reviewed By Divinduo - Lake Placid, United States

We try to go to at least a half-dozen Otters games each summer, frequently with our daughter, son-in-law and now teenage grandson. He comes for the food...we come for seeing the game played mostly out of pure love of the game by the teams (heaven knows Frontier League isn't about the money or really any true chance at making it to the 'Big Leagues'). Bosses Field is iconic (check out the movie, A League of Their Own, it was filmed there. Only complaint is while it is very inexpensive to attend the games, the food and drink are prices right up there with the Big League concessions The crowds are too frequently very sparse and I really believe a lot more families could be brought in with a promotion of a ticket, a hot dog or burger, chips and a drink for $10. That's still a big chunk for young families but for a whole evening's entertainment where one can virtually let their kids loose and explore the grandstands plus cluster down at the fence by the bullpens and dugouts and actually talk to the players, all in a safe, family-friendly environment.

We recently visited Gattitown for the first time to celebrate my daughter's 7th birthday with our family. We were all impressed! The food was all really good and fresh, with a nice variety. The kids loved the games of course! The staff were all cheerful and friendly and the place was clean. I felt bad for one young man working behind the prize counter because he was helping so many people all by himself, but he handled it well. Overall a great experience and I'm only sorry we didn't visit sooner. We will return!

We go to every zoo on our road trips that we can. This small zoo is run by the City of Evansville and is a gem. We went on the Friday of the 4th of July week and expected larger crowds, but it was not crowded at all. They don't give a AAA discount but our admission for both of us was $19. Their grounds are kept immaculately. Free parking. Clean rest rooms. Really great restaurant grill for food, no sweet stands and only one souvenir store which is unusual for most zoos. So no constant opportunities for kids to beg for goodies. We got to feed the giraffes for only $2!!, attended a free rhino talk, and we got to see them feed the jaguar. There are lots of filtered water stations thoughout the park. Really a great half day activity.

Burdette Park

Reviewed By NatCxt

Quick thing: No, I did not go in January 2021 or 2020, it had no other options. Almost every year, my summer camp (about 20 people) goes there every other Tuesday. It's such a great place, always easy to socialize with friends and have fun. Just be prepared to do a lot of walking. Burdette is a huge place and there is tons of concrete. The waterslide you must take a tube and walk with it up a big hill. To get to the other sides of the pool without swimming, you'll have to walk all around the pool. This isn't a bad thing though while walking around you might see things you want to get or try, and they have beautiful trees surrounding the area. The bathrooms are OK, could be a bit better for the smell and water almost everywhere... Lockers are very helpful and free open chairs are nice. The large umbrellas are very relaxing to stay under on a hot day, too. Music plays, and it really brings you back to old summers. I recommend going there with large groups, especially friends. Seriously an amazing place to be.
