This rectangular bacino is the old harbour of the town now with its entrance arched over by a venetian-style bridge. It is surrounded by palaces, hotels and restaurants but continues as a genuine fishing port with indigenous fishing boats. The harbour has an active 'Friends of' association who keep its interests at heart. This is a fine place to dine in the evening: especially at 'Colomba'.

As we had a spare morning, we decided to explore Desenzano del Garda, which we reached by bus from Sirmione where we were staying. We are glad that we did as Desenzano is a delightful place, with its winding streets, free of the tourists that mob Sirmione, and everything is close together. Having been to the Roman villa in Sirmione, we naturally visited the one here, which was entirely different, more domestic in character, and with the most wonderful mosaic floors, each one different as one room flowed into another, with some of the patterns almost contemporary in design. The site starts with a small exhibition of some of the archaeological finds - others being in the main museum at the other end of the town. The Villas is not to be missed if you have an interested in Roman art and architecture. A sign of the new tourist priorities - new signs were in Italian and German, though we were provided with a booklet in English to borrow as we walked around.

We used the ferry services nearly every day that we were in Desenzano and it enabled us to see and visit so many of the lakeside towns from a fabulous viewpoint. The staff are helpful and all speak some English. The timetable sometimes needs a little understanding, as some of the routes go via several other stops. But, hey, relax you are on holiday in a gorgeous part of Italy Some of the boats are rapido service, for which there is a supplement. Some of the bigger boats offer refreshment facilities, ie drinks and snacks.

The Castle of Desenzano was first built before the year 1000 on the perimeter of an ancient Roman "castrum". It was built as a defensive enclosure to protect the inhabitants of the suburb and to give them shelter from frequent raids of bandits and rival neighbours and from raids of Hungarians. Between 1882 and 1885 the final transformation of the Castle was completed, when, solicited by the town authorities, the inside suburb together with the whole west side of the boundaries was demolished to make place for the barracks "Beretta" in neo-Gothic style. The restoration only consisted in integration of missing elements in walls, cleaning of stone surfaces and improvement of masonries. Under the battlements the rampart walk was reconstructed while, in the inside courtyard, a small arena was built for concerts, demonstrations and the commemoration of historical events.
Over the hill the castle is dominated the lake since the 10th century. It was built to defense citizens from barbaric invasions. A beautiful view on the lake can be seen from here

Despite being in one of the more touristy areas of Italy Desenzano del Garda retains an atmosphere of a real local town, it doesn't seem to have been taken over with gift shops and ice cream parlours like some of the others around. Some great places to eat too. Well worth a visit if you are in the Lake Garda area.
